Every year, the rainy season typically sees an increase in reports of venomous animal incidents, especially the problem of "snakes" entering people's homes. During wet rainy periods, snakes' natural habitats often flood, forcing them to move in search of dry, warm areas with food sources and shelter. Human residences often become the primary target. Learning proper ways to prevent snakes from entering homes is essential for the safety of everyone inside.
1. Eliminate Snake Food Sources Snakes often follow the scent of prey into homes, with rats, frogs, toads, and common rodents being their main food. Removing garbage and cleaning areas to prevent rodents from nesting can reduce factors that attract snakes to your house.
2. Seal Cracks and Entry Points Snakes can slither through small gaps, especially young or small snakes. Check and seal cracks in walls, door frames, and drainage pipes by installing strong mesh or screens over drainage openings.
3. Organize Your Garden and Trim Tree Branches Clear overgrown grass, piles of wood, bricks, or debris around your home, as these damp hidden spots are favored snake hiding places. Also, trim tree branches that touch or hang near the roof or house to prevent snakes from climbing trees and entering the home.
4. Use Irritants or Deodorizing Blocks Although not 100% effective at eliminating snakes, spreading slaked lime, sulfur, or strong-smelling liquids around fences and shaded areas irritates snakes' sensory systems, making them avoid those spots.
5. Install Fine Mesh or Snake Fencing For homes with large gardens or near forests and water sources, installing fine mesh fencing (with openings no larger than 1 centimeter) around the property, buried several centimeters into the ground, helps prevent snakes from slithering inside.
If a snake is found inside the house, the most important action is to stay calm and keep your distance. Do not attempt to catch or harm the snake yourself, especially if you are not experienced, as venomous snakes like cobras, king cobras, or kraits may pose serious danger. Maintain at least 2–3 meters distance, observe the snake's movement direction, and immediately call emergency hotlines for assistance.
