The story began in 1997 when Chris Roy, an American software developer, found an orange stray cat near his home. He temporarily took the cat in and named him "Doobert." Their bond grew stronger, leading Chris to adopt Doobert permanently. They lived together for 17 years until Doobert passed away in 2014.
After losing his beloved cat, Chris Roy designated 1 September as Ginger Cat Appreciation Day to honor Doobert’s memory and to encourage society to pay attention to abandoned animals. He also developed the “Doobert” platform to connect shelters, foster homes, and volunteers, collaborating with over 1,200 organizations across North America and more than 27,000 volunteers.
Orange cats are often seen as playful, friendly, affectionate, hearty eaters, and frequently cause their owners some headaches with their antics. Some studies based on owner surveys have found that orange cats score relatively high in friendliness and trainability. However, coat color alone does not determine personality, as behavior also depends on genetics, upbringing, environment, health, and individual experiences.
According to beliefs, orange and gold colors symbolize wealth, warmth, and positive energy, leading to orange cats being regarded as lucky cats. Some owners believe having an orange cat at home attracts wealth, enhances good fortune, and brings happiness to family members.
