The Sorting Hat is back, allowing Potterheads to choose their Hogwarts house once again with a new experience featuring animation, music, and narration.
The official Harry Potter website, HarryPotter.com, launched a new version of the Hogwarts house Sorting Hat quiz on Back to Hogwarts Day, 1 Sep 2026 GMT+7, the day when students in the wizarding world board the train to the magical school.
Taking the Sorting Hat quiz offers new experiences including background music, modern animations, and real voice narration, following the steps of first-year students going to Hogwarts—from receiving the acceptance letter delivered by owl, to the Hogwarts Express train, and finally arriving at the Great Hall.
What remains unchanged are the questions themselves; the website confirms that it uses the original set of questions written by J.K. Rowling during the Pottermore era, and the Sorting Hat still uses the traditional method to decide.
Notably, Harry Potter fans who have previously taken the house sorting test can retake it once more, with the condition that it is only allowed once per person. If the new result differs from their original house, the website states players can choose whether to stay in their original house or move to the new one.
The questions used for sorting into the four houses—Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff—avoid directly referencing the personality traits representing each house. Instead, they ask to choose between the moon or stars, a left or right door that look identical, which historical title one would like to be remembered by among The Great, The Wise, The Bold, and The Good, or how to respond if a Muggle reveals they know you are a wizard.
At the end of the quiz, the system announces the assigned house along with its emblem.
