Rockstar Confirms Next Game After GTA 6 Wont Take Nearly a Decade

Rockstar Games executives have pledged in advance that fans won't have to wait as long for the next game after GTA VI, because the engine, tools, and team built during GTA 6's development will serve as a foundation to accelerate future game production.

Rockstar Games executives are confident that fans will not have to wait as long for the next game after Grand Theft Auto VI. The engine, tools, and team developed during GTA 6's production have laid the groundwork for faster future game development. This statement appeared in Bloomberg's behind-the-scenes report on GTA 6 development, ahead of the game's release on 19 Nov 2026, which comes 8 years after the studio's last game, Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Rockstar has not yet revealed what the next game will be.

Aaron Garbut, another development lead, added that the project involved extensive changes to the infrastructure, but once completed, the team will not have to rebuild everything from scratch.

Bloomberg compared the arrival of GTA 6 to GTA 3, the series’ first 3D gameplay title, which paved the way for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to be released the very next year in 2002. This has led to speculation that Rockstar Games might release another GTA installment more quickly by simply changing the city setting.

Many fans expect that if Rockstar Games doesn't need as long to develop the next game as it did for Grand Theft Auto 6, the next title to launch should be Red Dead Redemption 3, although Rockstar has yet to signal whether the western-themed game is currently in development.

About a year ago, Dan Houser, co-founder and former lead writer at Rockstar, said Red Dead Redemption III is a possibility. Meanwhile, Roger Clark, who voices Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, stated in 2023 that he is confident fans will see a third installment someday, though he doesn’t know when. He also believes Arthur Morgan's story concluded with Red Dead Redemption II.

. . Roger Clark later explained in an interview with IGN that while he has no insider information, he believes a new Red Dead game is inevitable because the previous title sold over 60 million copies and is a significant franchise that naturally invites sequels.
