Turning an Aging Society into Opportunity: Engaging 50+ to Drive the 3.5 Trillion Baht Silver Economy

The perception of an aging society, once seen mainly as a challenge, is shifting as the older generation emerges as a key driver of economic growth.

Recently, ThaiHealth, BMA, and YoungHappy have collaborated to promote the potential of people aged 50 and above, known as the Active Silver Generation, encouraging a more proactive role.

This approach aligns with the expanding Silver Economy market, which is forecasted to exceed 3.5 trillion baht in economic value in the near future.

Turning an aging society into a golden opportunity to boost the Silver Economy to 3.5 trillion baht.

The senior consumer market, or Silver Economy, is becoming a major force driving Thailand’s economy, with spending expected to reach 3.5 trillion baht by 2033, a leap from 2.18 trillion baht in 2023.

This growth corresponds with Thailand’s transition to a super-aged society by 2029, currently having nearly 14 million elderly people (21.6%) and expected to approach one-third of the total population by 2040.

To respond to this trend, YoungHappy, ThaiHealth, and BMA have jointly organized the“Eldergy Festival: LIFE FOR LONGEVITY – Living Well, Living Long.”The event draws thousands of seniors to engage in learning, career development, and building long-term quality of life.

Not a burden age: three perspectives transforming people aged 50+ into city development drivers.

Age 50 and above is not a time to withdraw from life but a period full of new opportunities, as these three organizations recognize the hidden potential of the elderly.

  • ThaiHealth focuses on mental care to reduce loneliness. Ms. Poranee Pooprasert, representative of ThaiHealth, pointed out that beyond physical health, creating intergenerational community connections helps prevent mental loneliness and promotes long-term well-being.
  • BMA supports employment opportunities. Mr. Sanon Wangsangboon, Deputy Governor of BMA, stated that people aged 50+ possess both potential and experience, making employment promotion policies for seniors a core element in driving economic and social progress.
  • YoungHappy emphasizes new definitions measured by goals. Mr. Chakit Promyos, Chairman of YoungHappy’s Board, stressed that the value of seniors is measured by life goals, not age. Starting care and preparation from age 50 helps timely adjustment of health, skills, and finances.

Not just longevity but happiness: the power of seniors driving the economy.

Healthy longevity alone may no longer be the sole answer for an aging society. Results from over a thousand members show that modern seniors desire happiness, friendship, and meaningful independence.

The collaboration of ThaiHealth, BMA, and YoungHappy marks an important step in shifting old perceptions toward an Active Silver Generation lifestyle—rich in experience and purchasing power—ready to be a main force propelling Thailand’s stable economic and social growth.
