Google Gradually Allows Gmail Users to Change Address Once Per Year

Change your email name without starting from scratch. The new Alias system helps preserve data and fully receive emails sent to the old address, with a limit of three names throughout your account's lifetime.

Google addresses the issue for users wanting to change their Gmail address. According to the Hindi support page, Google is gradually enabling some users to change their @gmail.com email address to a new name. This feature is good news for those wanting to update an email address set long ago or for users who have changed their personal name or surname.

Technically, this feature works by adding a secondary address to the existing account rather than permanently changing the address. Emails sent to the original address will continue to arrive in the inbox as usual. Users can also use the old address to sign into connected services because the system automatically sets the original address as an Alias of the new one. This ensures all data, including messages, photos in Google Photos, or files in Drive, remains intact.

However, Google has imposed some restrictions on this feature: users can only change their address once per year and can create up to three new addresses in total. They still have the option to switch back to their original email name at any time.

Additionally, there is a warning for ChromeOS users that they may experience syncing issues with settings and some files, so backing up data before changing the name is recommended.

Currently, the English support page has not been updated with this information. The feature is being gradually rolled out globally, with an official announcement from Google expected soon.
