
The long-standing record of the Nintendo DS has been broken, while the Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new milestone by selling nearly 18 million units in under a year, surpassing the sales record of the Nintendo Wii U.
In part of Nintendo's earnings report, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch has now sold a cumulative total of 155.37 million units worldwide since its launch in 2017. This figure puts the Nintendo Switch ahead of the legendary handheld console Nintendo DS, which held a record of 154.02 million units sold.
Nintendo's next goal is to surpass Sony's PlayStation 2, which ended production in 2013 and sold 160 million units.
Nintendo confirmed that the company will continue to sell the original Nintendo Switch model even though the Nintendo Switch 2 has become the primary product.
Demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 surged significantly during the holiday season, with sales reachinga peak during the high shopping period.Sales hit 7.01 million units, bringing the total Nintendo Switch 2 sales to 17.37 million since its launch in June 2025. In less than a year, it has already surpassed the sales of the Nintendo Wii U.
Nintendo aims to achieve sales of 19 million Nintendo Switch 2 units by the end of the current fiscal year.
