Google is testing a new system on Google Search that uses AI to adjust original news headlines onthesearch results page, raising concerns in the media industry about the risk of misinformation.
Google is conducting a new trial that has caused significant concern among the media, introducing AI to modify the original news headlines on the search results page. Google claims this is to better align the headlines with users' search queries by generating new, processed headlines.
According to The Verge, this experiment by Google is not limited to Google Discover but has extended to the main search results page, where Google's system extracts parts of website content to summarize into new headlines, replacing the original headlines written by journalists from the news outlets.
The Verge also pointed out errors in Google's experiment, noting that a review of an AI tool had its headline changed by Google from“I tried the AI tool ‘Cheat Everything,’ and it didn’t help me cheat at all.”to“‘Cheat Everything’ AI Tool”which does not reflect the original context of the writing.
However, Google defended the trial, saying it is still limited and not available to the general public. They also stated the system does not use Generative AI but instead identifies content within the page that it considers most relevant to the user's search query to serve as the headline. Interestingly, Google did not elaborate on what technology powers this system if it is not Generative AI.
Due to these issues, various news organizations are concerned that Google's system will definitely affect click-through rates but also impactthe accuracyof the information that is disseminated to a large number of readers within just a few hours.
