Gemini and Meta AI access the most sensitive personal data among AI apps, in contrast to Jasper and Claude, which promote privacy by collecting less data than average.
Surfshark, a VPN service provider, has revealed survey results on the data collection behavior of the top 10 popular AI Chatbots onthe App Store.This is based on information that Apple requires developers to disclose.
Surfshark's survey found that each AI Chatbot collects an average of 14 types of user data out of a possible 35 categories, and more than 70 percent of the surveyed apps collect users' location data.
Meta AI collects 33 out of 35 types of data, nearly 95 percent of all categories, and is the only app in the survey that collects users' financial information. Additionally, Meta AI collects sensitive data similar to Google's Gemini, covering race, sexual orientation, disabilities, religious beliefs, and biometric information.
Gemini collects 23 types of data, including location information. Only four apps in the survey collect location data: Gemini, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity.
Gemini also collects contact information, user content, contact lists, search history, and browsing history.
In contrast, Anthropic's Claude and Jasper AI clearly collect less data than average, with Jasper AI collecting the least data among all surveyed applications.
