Claude has become a viral topic online for unexpectedly interrupting conversations when used for extended periods, telling users to go to sleep or drink water.
Social media is abuzz with unexpected behavior from Claude AI, an artificial intelligence product by Anthropic, as many users share experiences of Claude interrupting long conversations by telling them to “go to sleep,” “take a rest now,” or even reminding them to drink water.
This behavior likely stems from Anthropic positioning its AI with a focus on user safety, combined with alignment to human ethical principles through a system called Constitutional AI, designed to respond based on set guidelines rather than solely on human ranking feedback.
When a user's conversation with Claude extends late into the night or lasts several hours, the algorithm is triggered to automatically check on well-being. Although this is just language pattern generation from trained data, the natural-sounding reminders genuinely convey emotional care to users.
However, some observers suggest the reminders to rest may have a hidden reason: lengthy and complex conversations require heavy processing power and incur high costs. Thus, the AI suggesting breaks could be an indirect strategy to reduce server load during peak usage.
Meanwhile, Sam McAllister from Anthropic commented that this is simply a character trait not to be overemphasized, and future improvements may be made to optimize system performance.
