ChatGPT Makes History with 1 Billion Monthly Users, Fastest in the World

OpenAI's ChatGPT took about three years to reach 1 billion monthly users, achieving this milestone amid growing competition in the AI industry.

Sensor Tower released a report stating that ChatGPT, OpenAI's application, surpassed 1 billion cumulative monthly users worldwide in May, just three years after its initial launch—the fastest in recorded history.

ChatGPT's growth speed is considered "faster" than globally popular applications like TikTok, Instagram, Google Maps, and even YouTube.

These figures reflect that AI applications are becoming a technological disruptor and have already entered common user behavior.

However, these numbers are statistical estimates from Sensor Tower and have not been officially announced by OpenAI.

Currently, ChatGPT is facing challenges, particularly from the growth of Claude, which now has about 56 million monthly users.

Though just a fraction compared to ChatGPT’s user base, Claude’s year-over-year growth rate is as high as 640 percent.

From another perspective, ChatGPT is a widely recognized name among consumers, whereas Claude is less known, with most of its users being software developers.

There is also a major question whether these user numbers translate into paid subscriptions for ChatGPT, given that AI technology economics still involve high costs; each processing task incurs significant expenses, and offering free access represents a cost, not revenue.

OpenAI’s next challenge is converting its billion users into paying subscribers to cover operating costs. Having a billion users marks success in technology adoption, but convincing that billion to pay is the crucial next goal for OpenAI.
