Developers have found hidden commands designed to support a hinge and dual-screen processing, reinforcing rumors of the iPhone Ultra launch this September.
At the WWDC 2026 event held earlier this week, Apple officially introduced the iOS 27 operating system, which developers have already begun testing.
Sam Henry Gold, a developer and researcher, posted on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account @M1Astra that he discovered a set of commands specifically designed to support foldable smartphones. These commands include variables such as foldState, mechanicalAngleDegrees, angleDegrees, and MGGetLogicalDeviceDisplayCount, which allow the software to interpret the screen’s folding status, measure the hinge angle, and identify the number of active display screens.
Notably, these commands have never appeared in the current iOS 26 operating system, marking this as new information.
This discovery from the source code further confirms rumors that Apple plans to launch a foldable iPhone under the name iPhone Ultra this September.
So far, the iPhone Ultra is believed to feature a dual-screen or side-by-side app window design to enhance productivity, with app interfaces arranged similarly to those on an iPad to better utilize the wider screen space when fully unfolded.
Apple’s main competitors in the foldable smartphone market currently include major brands like Samsung and Huawei, both of which have been producing foldable phones for over five years. Apple’s entry as a new player is highly anticipated and could accelerate the foldable phone market becoming mainstream.
