YouTube Shorts, Google's short-video platform, announced a batch of feature upgrades including a system to hide on-screen buttons, a 2x speed increase triggered by holding down, and a quick mute button that appears when pausing the video playback.
Modern applications are increasingly merging features until distinctions blur. YouTube announced new features and interface changes for its short-video platform, YouTube Shorts, incorporating popular functions from competitors like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Tests showed that simplifying control buttons helps users provide feedback on videos more naturally and easily.
The most noticeable design change is replacing the traditional thumbs-up icon for Likes with a "heart" icon, while removing the Dislike button from the Shorts feed.
YouTube explained that users often confuse whether to press the dislike button for general content they do not like or to flag content that might violate community guidelines.
However, deeper options in the three-dot menu—such as Report, Not Interested, and Don’t Recommend This Channel—remain unchanged.
Additionally, YouTube has added a Clear Screen function that hides description text and all buttons during viewing to avoid obstructing the short video content. This is similar to TikTok’s previously introduced Clear Mode feature. Alongside this, a mute button now automatically appears when users pause a video, making it easier to silence background noise.
Regarding playback speed control, Shorts users can quickly double the video speed by holding a finger on the edge of the screen, with normal speed resuming upon release. To lock the speed at 2x continuously, users can hold and drag down to the play button. These features reflect platforms’ efforts to adapt to consumers’ preference for fast, concise content consumption today.
