Anthropic, the developer of Claude AI, has introduced a new feature called Reflect with Claude that allows users to review their usage habits, along with tools similar to Screen Time and a framework for mindful AI use.
The problem of excessive smartphone use has long been widely recognized, but now there are signs that people may also be over-relying on AI chatbots like Claude AI, Gemini, and ChatGPT.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, is testing a beta feature designed to help users review their AI usage behavior and possibly encourage them to reduce it.
Previously, Tony Fadell, the father of the iPod, stated that the tech industry had not sufficiently considered the problem of excessive smartphone use when creating these devices, suggesting that AI overuse should be addressed early before it becomes a major issue. Anthropic agrees with this view, which led to the development of the Reflect with Claude feature.
This feature begins by summarizing each user's overall Claude usage, covering main topics frequently discussed, usage patterns, and typical tasks performed via the chatbot. Users can review activity going back 12 months. It also summarizes when users most heavily use Claude and what types of tasks occupy their time.
Then, Claude periodically asks users whether they are using it too much, posing reflective questions such as what they would prefer to do themselves even though Claude can perform the task faster. It also allows users to discuss this topic directly with Claude.
Anthropic has also included Screen Time-like tools in the user dashboard, enabling users to set quiet hours or configure alerts reminding them to take breaks after continuous use for a set duration.
Additionally, Anthropic promotes the 4D AI Fluency Framework, comprising four elements: Delegation—setting goals and deciding how to use AI; Description—communicating goals effectively to AI; Discernment—evaluating the accuracy and usefulness of AI outputs; and Diligence—taking responsibility for actions performed with AI.
