Samsung is preparing to showcase a new folding screen design at the Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event under the new name Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, which has caused some confusion due to its naming.
As widely known, Apple is expected to enter the foldable smartphone market around September. Meanwhile, Samsung, a long-standing player in this market, plans to redesign its foldable phones and introduce a new name, expected to be Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. There is also another model named Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
The Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on 22 July 2026. Although the device may not be available for purchase on the day of the event, based on previous release patterns, it is expected to launch within a few weeks afterward.
The most confusing aspect is the model name. Although it is anticipated that the new wide-folding screen model will be called Galaxy Z Fold 8, in terms of design, it is not a direct successor to the Z Fold 7 launched in 2025. Reports suggest Samsung will also release another successor to the Z Fold 7 at the same event, named Z Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung has not officially explained the reason behind this naming.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to have a 5.5-inch outer screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 7.6-inch inner screen also at 120Hz. It will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, 12GB RAM, storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, and a 4,800mAh battery. Consumers expect the battery to last 24 hours on a single charge.
Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is believed to be Samsung's concept model featuring an inner screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Regarding photography, rumors indicate the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will have only two rear cameras: a 50-megapixel wide-angle and a 50-megapixel ultrawide. The front camera will be a 10-megapixel selfie camera.
Pricing remains uncertain, but it is expected to be higher due to the ongoing shortage of memory chips.
