ChatGPT users on Plus and Pro plans will gain access to the new GPT-5.6 version, just like free and Go package users.
OpenAI announced the removal of text chat limits for free and Go ChatGPT users, switching their default model to GPT-5.6 Luna from GPT-5.5 Instant. They also introduced a Think button for higher-level processing on tough questions. The new model will start rolling out this week, with unlimited chat and the Think button gradually becoming available next week.
However, unlimited chat on ChatGPT's platform applies only to text messages. Uploads of files, images, audio, and image generation remain restricted. OpenAI cites these measures as safeguards against misuse.
Paid users on Plus and Pro plans will receive the enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol version, designed for general conversations. OpenAI states this model delivers more precise answers and adjusts detail levels according to question complexity.
OpenAI reported that internal evaluations involving finance, medical, and legal questions requiring factual detail found factual errors decreased by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna and about 68% with GPT-5.6 Sol compared to the GPT-5.5 Instant model.
This update comes as OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT now has approximately 1 billion weekly users worldwide.
