Apple employees refer to the first foldable iPhone expected to launch next month as the iPhone Ultra, but the official name has yet to be confirmed. It is anticipated that the name will be revealed at the Apple Event.
Mark Gurman, an Apple reporter from Bloomberg, revealed that Apple employees internally call the first foldable iPhone the iPhone Ultra. However, Gurman emphasized that we will have to wait until the Apple Event in September to see what the final name will be.
Since rumors of the foldable iPhone first emerged, people have called the device the iPhone Fold based on its design. By early 2026, insiders began to agree that the foldable phone will likely be named iPhone Ultra, following Apple’s pattern of using “Ultra” for its premium products, such as the Apple Watch Ultra and the high-end Apple M Series chips.
Gurman’s comments came in response to Max Weinbach, an analyst from Creative Strategies, who posted that he does not believe the foldable iPhone will be called iPhone Ultra because it doesn’t align with Apple’s branding approach. Weinbach sees the foldable phone as a product that is “different” from the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max rather than simply a higher-tier model, so it may not fit Apple’s definition of an Ultra-level product.
However, the fact that many employees call the device iPhone Ultra does not confirm that this will be its official name at launch. Apple maintains strict trade secret protections, and likely only a limited number of employees know all the details about the foldable iPhone.
It is possible that iPhone Ultra is just an internal codename that has caught on within the company.
Foldable iPhone or iPhone Ultrais expected to be unveiled at the September Apple Event, which may introduce up to eight new products at once. These include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, as well as smart home devices.
