Mark Gurman, a technology reporter for Bloomberg, spoke with Tom's Guide revealing details about the iPhone Ultra, Apple's first foldable phone, set to be announced at the Apple Event on 9 Sep 2024 GMT+7 under the slogan 'Surprise and Shine.'
The topic Gurman was most asked about was the iPhone Ultra's specifications. One early point is that MagSafe will likely be supported on the iPhone Ultra.
Regarding specs, the iPhone Ultra will have a 5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.8-inch inner screen. It is likely to use the Apple A20 Pro chip along with the latest modem developed by Apple itself.
The iPhone Ultra's selling point is its nearly crease-free screen and a hinge made from Liquid metal. Gurman explained that the crease will not completely disappear but is expected to be comparable to Samsung’s foldables, possibly even better due to Apple's stronger hinge. He added that Apple’s goal is to make the foldable screen as durable as or close to the durability of other iPhone models, which has been one of the company's main development focuses.
On the software side, Gurman previously reported that iOS 27 will allow app layouts similar to the iPad and support running two apps simultaneously in split-screen mode.
Recently, Gurman elaborated that the system will support drag-and-drop functionality between apps open on the same screen, enabling faster data transfer from one app to another.
Regarding the release date, despite rumors of delays, Gurman said he would be very surprised if the foldable phone does not launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max or shortly thereafter. He sees it as possible for a simultaneous launch or within a few weeks after, rejecting notions of postponements into late October or November due to supply chain issues.
On pricing, Gurman confirmed his earlier figure that the starting price will be $2,000 USD or about 80,000 baht, making the iPhone Ultra the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released.
