Galaxy S27 Ultra May Return to Using Exynos 2700 After Snapdragon Chip Overheating Issues Fail Samsungs Standards

Samsung has set a deadline for Qualcomm to resolve overheating issues by October; otherwise, the top-tier Galaxy S27 Ultra will switch to Samsung's in-house Exynos chip.

Samsung may switch to the Exynos 2700 chip for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, scheduled for release early next year, instead of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip as originally planned. Reports indicate the new Qualcomm chip suffers from excessive overheating and has not met Samsung's performance standards.

This report comes from Seoul Economic Daily, a South Korean economic news outlet, stating that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 has not achieved the thermal stability Samsung requires for flagship smartphones. Under heavy continuous use, the chip overheats significantly and must drastically reduce its operating speed to control temperature. Samsung has raised these concerns with Qualcomm and given them until the end of October to address the issues.

If Qualcomm resolves the performance and thermal issues as specified, Samsung will proceed with the Snapdragon chip as planned. However, if problems persist, the Galaxy S27 Ultra may instead adopt the Exynos 2700 chip.

The Exynos 2700 is Samsung's latest flagship chip, manufactured using 2-nanometer architecture technology.

If this change occurs, it would represent a major strategic shift for Samsung, as the Galaxy S Ultra models have consistently used Snapdragon chips over recent years. The last model to use an Exynos chip in some markets was the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
