Omdia forecasts that wide foldable smartphones will hold over 60% of the market by 2027, while Samsung Display exclusively manufactures screens for both Apple and Samsung.
Omdia, a technology market research firm, projects that AMOLED shipments for foldable smartphones will increase by 44% in 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching around 29 million units, rebounding from a 12% decline in 2025.
The main driver is the rise of wide foldable smartphones, expected to account for 44% of all foldable screen shipments this year, led by Apple’s iPhone Duo and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8.
Brian Hu, a display research analyst at Omdia, stated that the share of wide foldable screens will exceed 60% in 2027. This wide foldable type is the newest form of foldable smartphones, differing from the book-style fold, which has a more square inner screen, and the clamshell style, which is smaller. When unfolded, the wide foldable reveals a horizontally wider screen, making it better suited for video viewing.
The biggest beneficiary brand is Samsung Display, which counts major clients from both Samsung’s smartphone division and Apple, especially for producing the iPhone Duo.
Omdia forecasts that Samsung Display’s market share of foldable screens will rise to 66% this year, while Chinese panel makers such as BOE, China Star, Tianma, and Visionox will see their shares decline.
Omdia suggests the Chinese manufacturers’ share may shrink due to weakening demand for foldable smartphones from Chinese brands, although these brands might start adopting wide foldable designs in 2027.
It should be noted that Huawei pioneered this wide foldable smartphone format with the Pura X launched in March 2025, followed by the Pura X Max in May 2026, before Samsung and Apple released their own wide screen models this year.
Additionally, Omdia expects the flexible AMOLED market using LTPO technology to grow significantly. These screens cost more than LTPS panels but offer finer refresh rate control, making them suitable for premium foldable smartphones.
These figures represent shipments of inner display components, not complete smartphones. There is usually a delay before these screens appear in devices on sale. Another Omdia report from August projects total foldable smartphone shipments in 2026 will exceed 22 million units.
