Road Trip Down South: Pinpointing 5 Provinces of Unseen & Slow Life to Recharge Amid Natures Call

The sound of waves, mountains, and the essence of southern culture offer more than just the sea—they are a destination for travelers truly seeking a “slow life.”

For this trip, we packed our bags and set off down south in aRoad Trip.Traveling by Nissan Serena e-POWER, we explored the charm of five provinces: from Chumphon and Ranong, through Phang Nga, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, all the way to Songkhla. Prepare your favorite playlist and hop in the car to capture wonderful moments along the way.

Ranong: The Gateway to Lush Greenery and Waterways

The trip begins by heading westward, turning from Chumphon into Ranong—a province many consider just a pass-through. In reality, it's a hidden gem rich with pristine rainforests and numerous waterfalls.

Along the winding mountain roads lined with lush greenery, the first must-see spot is Punyaban Waterfall, a beautiful year-round stream beside Phetkasem Road. It’s perfect for a refreshing stop to breathe in fresh air and sample fiery southern Thai dishes from local vendors—a refreshing way to kick off the trip.

Thap Put, Phang Nga: Falling for the Old Town in the Valley

From Ranong, drive down to the old town district of Thap Put in Phang Nga, where time seems to slow. The Sino-Portuguese shophouses blend with ancient Chinese shrines and cool street art in the alleys, making it a delightful place to wander and snap photos without noticing the time.

Highlights include a stroll along Boon Sung Iron Bridge and visiting Taoming School, set against towering mountains. Although the old town’s alleys are narrow, driving here is surprisingly relaxed, making it easy to explore and enjoy local treats like traditional pork satay or rice noodles by the shrine. It’s the charm of a small town packed with character.

Surat Thani: A Moving Living Room Amid Khao Sok Forest

Step into ultimate nature therapy at Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani, known as one of the oldest rainforests. The striking limestone mountains contrasting with the emerald waters of Cheow Lan Dam offer a million-baht view you must see in person.

While driving through the natural scenery, we absorbed panoramic forest views as if a living room had been set up in the wilderness. Whether cruising slowly or stopping at a stylish wooden café along the way, the vibe is pure relaxation.

Nakhon Si Thammarat: Oxygen from Mountains and Ocean Waves

Continuing on to Kiriwong village, one of Thailand’s top spots for fresh oxygen, activities here are simple: spread a picnic mat by the stream, dip your feet in cool water, and sip coffee at a slow bar. The convenience of this trip lets you easily grab picnic gear from the car trunk, perfect for light camping enthusiasts.

At sunset, change the scene by driving down the coast to Thong Yang Bay viewpoint, a quiet seaside road. Stop to enjoy fresh seafood caught by local fishermen, perfectly ending a day filled with both mountain and sea experiences.

Songkhla: The Charm of the City Between Two Seas

The trip ends in Songkhla by crossing the Chalerm Phra Kiat 80th Anniversary Bridge (Ekkachai Bridge), stretching over Songkhla and Thale Noi lakes. The roadside views of grasslands and water birds invite slowing down and rolling down the windows to soak in the scenery.

Entering Songkhla’s old town reveals a captivating contrast of architectures. Park to photograph the bright red landmark Red Warehouse (Hab Ho Hin) by the lake and the golden mermaid statue symbolizing Samila Beach. Exploring the local food scene here is great fun—try pot ice cream, roti, and famous steamed buns. Despite the crowds, the city is easy to enjoy. Pin the south on your map and hit the road for a memorable trip.
