Hot weather and PM 2.5 pollution have made many people wonder. "Is washing hair every day good?" Doctors advise considering hair condition and clarify how many times per week you should wash your hair, dispelling the myth that frequent washing causes hair loss.
For Thai people facing hot, humid weather, easy sweating, and daily PM 2.5 pollution, washing hair to remove dirt has become an essential routine, raising the question, "Is washing hair every day good?"
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), washing hair daily isn’t beneficial for everyone. Shampoos clean excess oil and dirt, but washing too often can strip away natural oils (sebum) that protect the scalp and hair. This imbalance can lead to dryness, flaking, or, in some cases, cause sebaceous glands to produce more oil, making hair greasy faster than usual.
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for washing frequency; it should be based mainly on your "scalp condition" and "hair type," as follows.
On days with heavy pollution or after heavy sweating from exercise, leaving hair unwashed can cause buildup. If worried that daily shampooing harms hair, experts recommend rinsing with water alone or alternating between gentle shampoo and regular shampoo.
Observe your hair and scalp. If you notice these symptoms, it may mean your washing frequency is unsuitable:
1. Hair is unusually dry, brittle, and frizzy. This indicates over-washing has stripped nourishing oils.
2. Scalp has flaking patches. Itching and flaking may result from using very hot water or shampoos that excessively remove moisture.
3. Hair roots become greasy very quickly. This might be due to the scalp producing extra oil to compensate for dryness or washing too infrequently, causing buildup.
One common worry is. "The more you wash your hair, the more it falls out." Medically, hair that falls out during washing is in the resting phase (Telogen Phase), naturally shedding about 50-100 strands daily. Washing only helps remove these hairs; it does not weaken the hair roots unless you scratch the scalp harshly or are allergic to shampoo chemicals.
Ultimately, how often you should wash your hair and whether daily washing is suitable depends on your hair condition and lifestyle. Regularly observe scalp signals, adjust washing frequency accordingly, choose appropriate products, and wash with water at a normal temperature. These are key to keeping hair strong and healthy sustainably.
