Locals pray for blessings to the ancestral spirits 'Phor Pu Mae Ya' in large numbers at Kamchanod Island on Buddhist Lent Day, while sharp-eyed visitors do not miss 'lucky numbers' from the holy water bowl and divination incense, hoping for lottery luck in the 1 Aug 2026 draw
On 31 Jul 2026 at Kamchanod Island, the land of the Naga serpent king and home of ancestral spirits Phor Pu Srisuttho and Mae Ya Sripratum, located in Non Muang Village, Moo 11, Ban Muang Subdistrict, Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province, on 30 Jul, which coincided with Buddhist Lent Day, locals from all directions flocked to pray for themselves and their families, seeking luck and blessings. This caused the worship area for Phor Pu and Mae Ya to be crowded with visitors on this special day.
At the worship area in front of Kamchanod Island, the island's management committee organized a grand candle casting ceremony named 'Maha Chok Maha Lap Maha Mongkol' (Great Luck, Great Fortune, Great Auspiciousness) offered to the ancestral spirits in celebration of the Buddhist Lent festival. Ban Dung District Chief Mr. Suriyon Donsomjit presided over the ceremony, lighting incense and candles to pay homage to the Triple Gem. Attendees also participated in receiving precepts.
Following that, the candle casting ceremony was held to provide candles for monks to use during Buddhist Lent. After completing the candle casting, the ceremony continued with a worship ritual for Phor Pu and Mae Ya, led by the chief shaman of Kamchanod at the worship area. After the ritual concluded, traditional Kamchanod dancers performed.
For those who enjoy gambling, as the lottery draw approaches, many came to observe the candle wax tears in the giant holy water bowl. Each person saw different numbers; some saw 3-4-7, others 7-3-5, depending on individual interpretation. For those who preferred not to guess, divination incense lit on Buddhist Lent Day showed numbers 801 and 108. At the lottery stands near Kamchanod Island, the best-selling numbers, which quickly sold out, were 74 and 47.
