Mr. Akara Phromphao, Minister of Social Development and Human Security (SDHS), said that currently Thailand has 3,880,608 people with disabilities nationwide. The ministry is committed to advancing disability rights to ensure that people with disabilities and their families can access their rights comprehensively.
He explained that the current disability assessment uses physical criteria, which has resulted in some people with disabilities being unable to meet these standards or obtain disability ID cards, thus missing out on government welfare benefits.
His main focus is to reform disability assessment criteria from physical to social measures to promote broader access to rights. An official announcement will be made soon. Additionally, the disability allowance will be raised to a flat rate of 1,000 baht as a New Year gift for people with disabilities.
The ministry is ready to stand alongside people with disabilities, developing their potential and promoting careers to generate income and reduce family expenses. This aims to reduce inequality, promote equality for all, and maximize access to rights for people with disabilities.
Recently, two memoranda of understanding were signed: first, an MOU on promoting transportation systems, expanding product sales channels, and capacity building to increase career opportunities and income for people with disabilities and their caregivers, between the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, SDHS, and Thailand Post Company Limited.
Second, an MOU on applying space technology and geospatial innovation to promote and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, signed between the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, SDHS, and the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization).
