EEC Launches Re:Build Platform to Cut Carbon Emissions of Existing Buildings by up to 50%

Dr. Kittisak Prukkanon, Director of the Strategy and International Cooperation Division at the Department of Climate Change and Environment, speaking on "Re: Build Thailand – Challenges and Opportunities for Thai Buildings under the Climate Change Act," stated that Thailand’s building sector accounts for 36% of the country’s final energy consumption and is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

He added that the Climate Change Act is the main mechanism driving buildings to shift from being resource consumers to active participants in addressing climate change, establishing clear policy frameworks to support private sector investments aligned with Thailand’s carbon neutrality target by 2050.

Meanwhile, promoting low-carbon technologies and improving energy efficiency in buildings can reduce energy use by an average of 20–30% without affecting functionality or quality of life. The establishment of a climate fund will provide financial support and incentives to upgrade existing buildings and widely develop green buildings.

Buildings that adapt to environmental standards and ESG principles will gain competitive advantages, while those that do not will gradually lose economic opportunities in the future.

Dr. Kecha Theerakomen, Chairman of EEC Engineering Network Co., Ltd. and Chair of The NOVA Expo organizing committee, said that over the past 50 years, EEC has served as a consulting engineer in key domestic and international projects, with strengths in sustainability, energy efficiency, air quality, and building safety. Notable national projects involving EEC include One Bangkok, Cloud 11, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Nextopia, BDMS hospital network, RSU International Hospital, leading hotels, and hyperscale data centers.

Beyond project roles, EEC continuously develops Thai personnel by supporting professional associations, disseminating knowledge, and sharing real project experiences. This led to organizing The NOVA Expo as the most comprehensive and up-to-date platform for construction and building upgrade technologies in Thailand.

Additionally, The NOVA Community x 50th EEC Anniversary is designed to differ from typical building and energy events by serving as a strategic forum connecting all aspects of the building economy—from government policy, funding sources, technology, to practical business implementation. Key highlights include:

• Thailand’s first platform interpreting the Climate Change Act from the perspective of the building and construction industry, which is among the highest carbon-emitting economic sectors.

• Panel discussions bringing together policymakers, financial institutions, real estate developers, and professional organizations to define practical and economically viable Re:Build approaches. Panelists include Sararat Prakobchat, Deputy Director of the Energy Policy and Planning Office; Dr. Wichai Narongvanich, Assistant General Manager of Corporate Strategy and Innovation Division at Kasikornbank; and Jakrapan Phawangkharat, Head of Property Management at JLL Thailand and Secretary-General of the Property Management Association of Thailand.

• In-depth seminars on 10 practical building upgrades that have been proven to reduce energy, lower carbon emissions, and increase long-term building value.

Data shows that the building and construction sector emits about 37% of global carbon, mostly from operational energy use over a building's lifetime, while demolition and new construction cause substantial embodied carbon upfront. In contrast, Re:Build or upgrading existing buildings can reduce energy use by 20–40%, and in some cases more than 50%, immediately cutting carbon emissions.

In Bangkok, over 70% of buildings are more than 20 years old and located near mass transit hubs. Re:Build is therefore a critical tool to reduce carbon from construction, energy use, and transportation simultaneously.

Dr. Kecha noted that existing Thai buildings have high carbon reduction potential starting with systems that offer clear returns, such as:

• Smart Building & Building Automation, which can reduce total energy use by 10–20%.

• Smart Air-Conditioning & HVAC Optimization, a system consuming 40–60% of building energy, with reduction potential of 15–30%.

• Smart Water & Pumping Systems that decrease energy consumption, water use, and wastewater.

These technologies not only reduce carbon but also improve air quality, occupant well-being, and user experience, directly enhancing long-term real estate value.

Currently, multinational companies must report carbon emissions according to international standards, and this trend is expanding to Thai companies and supply chains. As a result, building carbon performance is becoming a key criterion for leasing, investment, and valuation. Buildings unable to demonstrate energy and carbon management risk losing competitiveness in the future.

The NOVA Expo 2026 will be held from 3–5 June 2026 at BITEC Hall 103–104, the only event providing technologies for cost-effective, practical Re:Build and building upgrades, with free seminars and consultations throughout, aiming to advance Thai buildings toward a truly sustainable future.

. Siam Daikin Sales Co., Ltd. and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to drive research on energy management and refrigerants in government buildings to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance sustainability goals. The collaboration focuses on delivering good air quality alongside efficient energy use through research and development of technologies that improve indoor air quality (IAQ) while designing and controlling air conditioning systems for energy efficiency. It also aims to elevate sustainable pollution control aligned with carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction goals, which are shared priorities across all sectors.

. Major Cineplex Group has partnered with Butterbear Café to create an international philanthropic event with the "Major x Butterbear Charity Auction," a highlight of the 30th CineAsia 2025 international conference. Proceeds will be donated to the Major Care Foundation to support educational development and create learning spaces for children and youth in remote areas across the country.

This collaboration is led by Wicha Poolvoralak, Chief Executive Officer, and Wisarut Poolvoralak, Corporate Strategy Director of Major Cineplex Group Public Company Limited, together with Thanawan Wongcharoenrat, co-founder, and Witee Wongcharoenrat, director of Butterbear. Both organizations share a vision to leverage brand power to create activities that not only address business needs but also generate positive social impacts long-term, especially providing opportunities for underprivileged children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly through the Major Care Foundation’s projects.
