Marketing Roundup: Tetra Pak Elevates Thailands Coconut Industry with Processing Innovations

Surapong Kobpraditkul, Production Process Director at Tetra Pak (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said that although coconut might seem like a simple raw material, each type of coconut product has very different properties and responses to processing. Coconut water requires careful control of time and temperature to maintain quality.

Meanwhile, coconut cream requires attention to texture and stability control. Therefore, we consider raw materials, product formulas, and processing conditions together from the start. Understanding these characteristics helps producers choose appropriate processing methods and maintain consistent product quality when scaling up production.

One key technology for coconut product manufacturing is the Tetra Pak Direct UHT solution, which uses steam injection and rapid cooling. With nearly 40 years of experience in processing and packaging coconut products, Tetra Pak

is ready to apply this knowledge and expertise to help producers select processing approaches suited to different products and formulas. The Direct UHT technology rapidly raises and lowers product temperature, reducing heat impact, minimizing browning, and preserving the unique flavor of coconut products.

When combined with aseptic production and packaging processes, it also allows products to be stored and distributed at ambient temperature without continuous refrigeration. Additionally, other technologies can be adapted to meet the specific needs of each product.

For example, airtight separation equipment reduces oxygen exposure during processing, and homogenization systems help achieve the desired texture and stability in coconut cream.

Beyond processing technologies, producers can utilize Tetra Pak’s Coconut Knowledge Center and Product Development Center in Rayong to develop and test product concepts, formulas, and processing options before commercial production.

With semi-industrial scale trial production capabilities, producers can assess whether a concept can become a viable product formula, determine how to process it consistently, and prepare for industrial-scale manufacturing.

Going forward, opportunities for product development are not limited to familiar items like coconut water, coconut milk, and cream. Coconut raw materials can be innovatively applied to a variety of beverages, including ready-to-drink tea and coffee,

barista products, dietary supplements, energy drinks, and sports beverages. This diversification enables producers to expand their portfolios and effectively meet evolving consumer demands.

Sutthinan Techayatanon, Customer Experience Creative Manager for the Asia Pacific region at Tetra Pak, said coconuts hold great untapped potential for new products and diverse consumption opportunities. At our Product Development Center in Rayong, producers collaborate with product and processing experts from the early stages of product development to understand how formulas behave during processing,

which aspects may need improvement, and how to prepare for scaling to industrial production. Looking ahead, we see opportunities to enhance the center’s capabilities to support coconut product development using the Tetra Recart® packaging solution.

Tetra Recart is part of Tetra Pak’s diverse packaging portfolio and is currently used for shelf-stable products like coconut milk and cream. This portfolio ranges from premium packaging with advanced technology to convenient, distinctive packaging solutions,

such as Tetra Prisma® Aseptic, Tetra Prisma® Aseptic Edge, and Tetra Classic® Aseptic. These options give producers a variety of choices to maintain product quality, meet consumer needs, and differentiate their brands across market segments.

Transforming Degraded Land into a Forest of Opportunities Mr. Chalermphon Iamkhana, Manager of TISCO Bank, along with TISCO Volunteer staff from the Chiang Mai branch, partnered with Haze Free Social Enterprise and farmers from Thung Fai Subdistrict, Mueang Lampang District, Lampang Province, to plant a 5-rai forest area under the "Model Project for Sustainable Smoke-Free Livelihood Forest Planting" for the third consecutive year. This initiative aims to restore degraded land from monoculture farming back to agroforestry, enhance biodiversity, increase community income, and honor the late Her Majesty the Queen Mother while continuing her royal conservation legacy.

They planted economic and conservation tree species such as big white pomelo, white cluster pomelo, Siamese pomegranate, guava, jackfruit, mango, Pho Kalapapruek, golden shower, and Chiang Rai yellow to create long-term income sources for farmers, reduce dependence on seasonal crops, and help address PM 2.5 pollution caused by agricultural burning.

The project also enhances the capacity to sequester carbon dioxide, enabling application for carbon credit certification under Thailand’s Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER) managed by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). This creates sustainable benefits for both the community economy and the environment.
