Inside IF Furnace Steel: Advancing to Safe, Eco-Friendly Structural Standards

A deep dive into IF furnace steel combined with ladle refining technology, advancing toward safe and environmentally friendly structural standards, highlighting innovation in steel production.

Dr. Sakchai Thanabodeejirapong, President of the Induction Furnace (IF) Metal Melting Trade Association, stated that amid societal and consumer concerns about construction material safety standards, steel production technology is under widespread scrutiny.

In particular, IF furnace steel has been criticized for past limitations. However, current metallurgical engineering has advanced significantly. Clean steel production using IF furnaces combined with ladle refining technology (Secondary Refining) not only overcomes previous contaminant removal challenges but also plays a key role in enhancing building structure safety, reducing air pollution by up to six times, and is crucial to the sustainability of Thailand’s construction industry.

1. Automatic steel stirring innovation ensures uniform steel composition. A common misunderstanding is the concern that IF furnaces cannot produce clean molten steel. In fact, the IF melting process operates on the principle

of electromagnetic induction generating eddy currents. This process creates automatic electromagnetic stirring, causing molten steel to circulate from the edges to the center and from bottom to top continuously, resulting in homogeneous chemical composition and temperature throughout the furnace.

Additionally, this magnetic stirring helps float lighter inclusions or impurities to the surface, enabling producers to efficiently add flux materials and remove slag from the furnace.

2. Quality enhancement via ladle furnace technology overcomes chemical limitations, dispelling notions about phosphorus and sulfur removal constraints. Modern IF steel plants incorporate secondary steel refining technology. When molten steel is transferred from the IF furnace to the ladle furnace (such as LF or AOD), argon gas is blown through and chemical composition is finely adjusted. Using ladle furnace technology with alkaline refractory materials can reduce sulfur content to as low as 0.002%. Controlling these impurities at low levels improves ductility and fracture toughness, preventing brittleness and making the steel suitable for earthquake-resistant structures.

3. Eliminating brittleness caused by nitrogen. A major metallurgical advantage of IF furnaces over Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) is nitrogen contamination. EAF uses high-temperature electric arcs, which ionize nitrogen molecules from the air, causing nitrogen absorption in molten steel at 80-100 ppm. This high nitrogen level leads to harder, more brittle steel. In contrast, IF furnaces operate without such arcs, minimizing nitrogen gas uptake and significantly reducing brittleness risks.

4. Environmentally and economically friendly with sustainability benefits. IF furnace technology emits much lower air pollution, producing only 1-2 kilograms of particulate matter per ton, compared to 6-12 kilograms per ton from EAFs—a sixfold difference. Noise levels are also lower, at 82-86 decibels. Importantly, operational costs are reduced by 20-25%, helping prevent monopolistic pricing in the domestic structural steel market.

Dr. Sakchai added that empirical engineering evidence shows that steel production with IF furnaces combined with ladle refining produces high-quality, clean steel with consistent standards throughout the manufacturing process. Enhancing correct understanding of this technology not only restores public and investor confidence in building safety but also supports environmentally responsible industry practices, forming a solid foundation for Thailand’s future infrastructure development.
