Bayer Thailand Ltd. organized the academic meeting "Even Better: Expanding the Limits of Time," bringing together retinal disease experts from Thailand and abroad to share knowledge and discuss advances in treatments that support both medical outcomes and patient quality of life.
Retinal diseases—including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO)—are major causes of vision loss and significantly impact many patients' quality of life. Most patients require ongoing, long-term treatment and monitoring.
However, new treatment innovations aim to control the disease while reducing the treatment burden and hospital visits, allowing patients more time for living, working, and family, leading to improved long-term quality of life.
The meeting featured distinguished retinal specialists from Thailand and abroad, including Associate Professor Dr. Nattawut Rodanant, Head of the Retina Department at Siriraj Hospital and President of the Retina Club of Thailand; Associate Professor Dr. Somnath Thungsuwan from Siriraj Hospital; Associate Professor Dr. Woraporn Chaikitmongkol and Professor Dr. Paradee Kunavisarut from Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University).
Also participating were Dr. Thanapong Somkijrungroj from Chulalongkorn Hospital; Associate Professor Dr. Somsiri Sukawatcharin from Ramathibodi Hospital; Associate Professor Dr. Wipada Laowirojkul from Srinagarind Hospital (Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University); and Professor Neil M. Bressler, MD, who shared the latest clinical data and treatment advances for retinal diseases.
A key topic was progress in treating retinal diseases with Anti-VEGFs drugs. Latest clinical data indicate that new innovations in this drug class allow some patients to extend intervals between treatments up to 24 weeks.
This reduces the burden of frequent hospital visits for treatment and follow-up, giving patients more time for family, work, and daily life while maintaining the primary treatment goals of preserving vision and controlling the disease long term.
Experts also stressed the importance of regular eye health check-ups, especially for the elderly, diabetic patients, and those with risk factors, to enable early detection of abnormalities and timely diagnosis and treatment—critical factors in preserving vision and patient quality of life over the long term.
The "Even Better: Expanding the Limits of Time" meeting highlighted current advances in retinal disease care and demonstrated collaboration among ophthalmology experts in sharing clinical knowledge and experience to support development of treatment approaches that balance disease control effectiveness with long-term patient quality of life.
