At the start of the year, many begin planning their personal income tax filings but have just realized that the education category tax deduction rights have changed! For 2025, deductions are only 1x, down from the previous 2x. When media inquired with the Revenue Department, they responded that an extension request for this promotion was submitted but was not processed in time due to the parliamentary dissolution.
This issue can be likened to the value-added tax (VAT), which normally has a base rate of 10%, but the Revenue Department often issues “special conditions” like promotions to reduce it to 7% temporarily.
. Regarding education tax deductions, the latest announcement states that donations to educational institutions via e-Donation are eligible for a 2x tax deduction from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024. Eligible educational institutions under the conditions include:
1) State educational institutions
2) Private schools, excluding non-formal schools
3) Private higher education institutions
4) Educational institutions established in Thailand under treaties or agreements between the Thai government and United Nations specialized agencies
5) High-potential foreign higher education institutions
Therefore, since there has been no new announcement extending this 2x deduction promotion for 2025, citizens currently cannot claim this benefit. However, there are several possible solutions:
1. The Revenue Department may request government approval to extend the promotion and grant retroactive tax deductions.
2. The Revenue Department may introduce a new 2x tax deduction promotion in the following year.
3. The 2x deduction right in this category may not be extended.
As citizens, it is important to continuously follow updates on the Revenue Department’s final conditions. According to inquiries at the Revenue Department Intelligence Center, if the department grants retroactive deduction rights, those wishing to use them will need to file amended tax returns later for consideration.
Nevertheless, there are new tax deduction rights available for 2025 if conditions are met, such as the Easy E-Receipt 2.0 project, the “Travel Well, Get Refund” program, deductions for wages paid for new residential construction, and deductions supporting the arts.
Readers can find more information in this article.Summary of special tax relief measures for 2025, including Easy E-Receipt 2.0, travel, and arts support.
Finally, before filing tax returns, always check details carefully, as the Revenue Department emphasizes that it is citizens’ responsibility to file correctly.
