At the start of the year, many people begin planning their individual income tax filings but have just realized that the education category tax deduction rights have changed! For 2025, the deduction is only 1x instead of the previous 2x. When the media asked the Revenue Department, they responded that they had submitted a request to extend this promotion but it was too late due to the parliament dissolution.
This issue is similar to the value-added tax (VAT), which normally has a 10% base rate, but the Revenue Department often issues “special conditions” like promotions to reduce it to 7%.
. Regarding education tax deductions, the latest announcement is that donations to educational institutions via e-Donation qualify for a 2x tax deduction from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024. Eligible educational institutions under these conditions include:
1) Public educational institutions.
2) Private schools, excluding non-formal schools.
3) Private higher education institutions.
4) Educational institutions established in Thailand under treaties or agreements between the Thai government and United Nations specialized agencies.
5) High-potential foreign higher education institutions.
Therefore, for 2025, since there has been no new announcement to extend this 2x education deduction promotion, the public currently cannot claim this benefit. However, there are several possible solutions:
1. The Revenue Department may request the government to extend the promotion and grant retroactive tax deduction rights.
2. The Revenue Department might issue a new 2x tax deduction promotion for the following year.
3. They might choose not to extend the 2x deduction rights in this category.
As citizens, we must continue to follow news updates closely to see what the Revenue Department’s final decision will be. According to inquiries at the Revenue Department’s RD Intelligence Center, if the Revenue Department grants retroactive deduction rights, those wishing to claim them must file additional tax returns later for the department’s consideration.
Nevertheless, the 2025 tax deduction rights include “new” options that taxpayers can use if they meet the conditions, such as the Easy E-Receipt 2.0 program, the 'Travel and Get Refund' program, deductions for wages paid for new residential construction, and support for art-related expenses.

Finally, before filing tax returns, we must always carefully check details because the Revenue Department emphasizes that it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to file correctly.
