Summary of Insurance Issues in the Ladprao Brewery Fire Case: OIC Reveals How to Check Policies Anywhere

The fire at "Brewery at Ladprao" on 12 Jul 2026 resulted in 27 deaths, 72 injuries, and 45 missing persons. This tragic event has caused many to question how it happened, but more importantly, how well those affected will be supported or compensated.

Insured... but how extensive is the coverage?

Although the brewery had insurance, the question remains whether the coverage purchased would cover the damages incurred. Initial information from the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) revealed that the brewery under the corporate name did not have insurance. However, in the individual name (the shop owner), fire insurance was purchased from Dhipaya Insurance Public Company Limited. Policy number 12001-108-260189414 covers the period from 18 Mar 2026 to 18 Mar 2027 with a sum insured of 40 million baht. However, this policy only covers property such as buildings, extensions, furniture, electrical appliances, and stock.

Adisorn Phipatvorapong, Deputy Secretary-General for Legal and Inspection, OIC, told Thairath Money that the policy found is under the personal name of the shop owner and only covers property. Currently, the owner is seriously injured and unable to provide further information. OIC is therefore urgently investigating whether the shop partners or related parties have purchased additional insurance policies.

If other policies are found, their details will be reviewed to see if they cover "injured parties," meaning the injured and deceased. Meanwhile, OIC is actively coordinating to assist those affected in identifying any personal insurance to facilitate faster claims. In cases where the brewery has no insurance covering third parties, relatives of the deceased and injured can still claim damages directly from the shop owner and partners through both criminal and civil lawsuits.

"Don't know what insurance exists" — how to check your rights...

Often after unexpected incidents, the main problem is "no one knows what insurance exists," causing the rights of survivors to be lost. Now, OIC offers an online service via LINE @OICConnect, allowing the public to easily check their insurance benefits, including:

  • My Policies A service to check all policy information from every insurer we have, consolidated on one screen for easier management. It includes details of current and past policies.
  • Heirs' Policy Search A new service enabling legal heirs, such as children or spouses, to check what insurance the deceased had. It uses identity verification through the ThaiD application by the Department of Provincial Administration. The system shows basic information like insurer name, policy number, type of insurance (life/accident), and policy status. This allows heirs to see preliminary details and contact insurers directly to file claims.

Finally, insurance is a tool for managing life risks, but before purchasing, one should understand and thoroughly study the details. Business owners should buy insurance fitting the risks of their business to mitigate possible impacts.
