Google Launches TalayLink Submarine Cable Connecting Thailand, Australia, and the Region to Support Data Center and Cloud in Thailand

Google Cloud launches "TalayLink" a new submarine cable connecting Australia and Thailand, aimed at enhancing access, stability, and flexibility of digital connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. This strategic routing will enable upcoming Data Centers and Cloud Regions in Thailand to seamlessly link to the global network.

The cable "TalayLink" is named after the Thai word "sea" This builds on the Interlink Cable project announced by Google Cloud last year under the Australia Connect initiative. The submarine cable will create a new route to Thailand through the Indian Ocean on the western side of the Sunda Strait, a location where most existing submarine cables currently run.

In September 2024, Google Cloud officially announced plans to invest over one billion U.S. dollars to build Data Centers and a Cloud Region in Thailand, aiming to strengthen AI infrastructure to support growth in the technology market. This is expected to add more than four billion U.S. dollars to Thailand's GDP by 2029.

TalayLink will have a connection hub in Mandurah, serving as a new landing point separate from Perth, Australia, where most submarine cables in Western Australia currently operate.

In Thailand, Google Cloud has partnered with AIS to utilize infrastructure in southern Thailand, already a key submarine cable junction, to accelerate deployment and maximize benefits from existing local infrastructure investments.

Narut Therdsteerasak, Secretary General of the Board of Investment (BOI) said, "The TalayLink cable is a crucial component of digital infrastructure that strengthens Thailand's digital connectivity and resilience."

"Combined with the upcoming Google Cloud Region and Data Center in Thailand, this investment not only enhances regional network and computing capabilities but also reinforces Thailand's role as a key Digital Gateway in Southeast Asia, driving future cloud and AI innovation sustainably." Narut Therdsteerasak added.

In this collaboration, Google Cloud has also partnered with International Gateway Company Limited (IGC), a subsidiary of ALT Telecom Public Company Limited (ALT), to connect the new submarine cable route to Thailand.

Once completed, TalayLink and the new connection hubs will increase telecommunications network resilience across Australia, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Additionally, combined with previously announced investments in connection hubs in the Maldives and Christmas Island, these projects will expand network connectivity throughout the Indian Ocean and extend to the Middle East region.
