Google Cloud Launches Domestic Cloud Region in Bangkok with $3 Billion Investment, Immediate Adoption by Banks and Major Organizations

Google Cloud announced the launch of a new “Cloud Region” officially in Bangkok, following Google's pledge to invest over 1 billion US dollars—approximately 30 billion baht—in digital infrastructure in Thailand. This expands Google's global technical infrastructure into Thailand, based on the cooperation agreement signed with the Thai government in November 2023 under the Cloud-First Policy.

The plan to establish this new Cloud Region, announced since August 2022, estimates that within five years of full operation, it will generate up to 1.4 trillion baht in economic value and create an average of 130,000 jobs per year. It will also enable government agencies, small businesses, startups, and large organizations to quickly, efficiently, and with low latency access AI/ML resources and on-demand computing.

Under this investment plan, Google also announced the establishment of Thailand's first Data Center in Chonburi Province to support increasing demand for Google Cloud, AI technology, and core Google services such as Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Workspace. These services are used by organizations, businesses, Thai citizens, and billions of users worldwide. Site preparations for construction are currently underway.

The "domestic cloud" unlocks regulatory constraints, reduces risks and latency, and eliminates the need to send data abroad.

Anan Siritikul, Country Director of Google Cloud Thailand, revealed that a key turning point for Thailand’s Cloud Region is meeting the needs of government and regulated industries, especially finance, banking, and organizations complying with personal data laws such as the PDPA.

The Bangkok Cloud Region includes three Availability Zones to support critical organizational systems, reduce system failure risks, and enable comprehensive data storage and processing within the country, secured by Google Cloud’s multi-layer encryption and security standards.

This Cloud Region connects to Google's network spanning over 200 countries and territories via terrestrial and submarine fiber networks totaling over 7.75 million kilometers, including submarine cables. TalayLink which directly connects Thailand to Australia.

This high-bandwidth, millisecond-latency connection not only enhances user experience domestically but also serves as a gateway for Thai businesses to expand services and transfer data toGoogle Cloud’s 43 global Regions. It also enables efficient connectivity with other cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and OCI.

Anan added that having a domestic Cloud Region will accelerate Thai organizations’ AI innovation by leveraging local infrastructure. Organizations can securely manage proprietary data within the country, and importantly, it serves as a gateway to Google’s global AI ecosystem—from BigQuery and Vertex AI to developing Agentic AI on the latest Gemini model—with the Bangkok Cloud Region as the entry point.

All of this is linked to the PanyaThAI project launched last December. Google Cloud designed this to accelerate enterprise AI adoption, with 15 leading Thai organizations as Charter Members across finance, retail, real estate, education, and telecommunications sectors.

Alongside data center investments, Google Cloud is advancing Thai personnel development through the ChaiyoGCP program, which has recorded over 110,000 training sessions, with more than 70% focused on AI content. The goal is to increase to 125,000 sessions by the first half of 2026. Also, the Google Skills platform offers over 3,000 free courses to enhance AI skills nationwide.
