Anthropic Challenges OpenAI with $30 Billion Deal Doubling Its Valuation, Emphasizing AI as Big Tech’s Financial Battlefield

Anthropic, the AI startup behind the chatbot Claude, announced on Thursday (12 Feb) that it successfully closed its latest funding round, raising over $30 billion (more than 932.7 billion baht), pushing its post-money valuation to $380 billion—more than double its valuation from the September funding round.

This funding round makes Anthropic the second private company, after OpenAI, to raise such a massive amount of capital.

Previously, OpenAI set a historic fundraising record by raising over $40 billion last year, led by SoftBank, and is currently negotiating to raise an additional $100 billion this year. Before this, the largest private funding deal was Ant Group’s $14 billion raise in 2018.

A key reason both Anthropic and OpenAI continuously raise enormous funds is the high cost of developing and training AI models, requiring significant investment in computing power—especially Nvidia GPUs. Both companies also face fierce competition from Google, which plans to invest up to $185 billion this year, heavily funding its Gemini project.

According to the company’s statement, Anthropic’s latest funding round was led by Coatue and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, with participation from D.E. Shaw Ventures, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ, and MGX.

Anthropic stated that this funding includes portions of previously announced investments from Microsoft and Nvidia. In November, Microsoft announced plans to invest up to $5 billion, while Nvidia planned to invest up to $10 billion.

The company explained that the funds will be used to expand infrastructure, advance research, and continue investing in enterprise-grade products after Claude received excellent feedback and is increasingly becoming an essential business tool.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and executives, Anthropic has seen early success in the enterprise customer segment, while OpenAI has grown prominently in the consumer market due to the global popularity of ChatGPT.

The company revealed that Anthropic’s annual revenue has risen to $14 billion, up from about $10 billion last year.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, told CNBC that about 80% of the company’s revenue comes from enterprise clients, partly driven by the popularity of the AI coding tool Claude Code, which automates certain software development steps.

Anthropic disclosed that Claude Code’s annual revenue has grown to $2.5 billion, with business subscriptions quadrupling since the start of last year; enterprise clients account for more than half of Claude Code’s revenue.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is aggressively promoting its own coding tool, Codex, to compete directly with Anthropic. Last week, it launched the new Codex model GPT-5.3-Codex along with a standalone app for Apple computer users.
