In the past few weeks, the name OpenClaw has rapidly gained attention among AI developers worldwide, evolving from a small open-source project to a bot hailed as an “AI Agent” that is currently one of the closest to a true personal assistant.
Most recently, this buzz intensified when Sam Altman of OpenAI announced that Peter Steinberger the creator of OpenClaw, the legendary open-source bot, and MoltBook, a social media platform for chatbots gaining popularity, would be joining OpenAI to develop the next-generation “Personal AI Agent” for the company.
OpenClaw is an autonomous AI Assistant offered as open-source software, allowing users to download, install, and run it on their own computers. Unlike typical chatbots or AI helpers, OpenClaw is designed to operate in the real world on behalf of users—handling tasks such as managing emails, scheduling appointments, contacting insurance companies, checking in for flights, browsing the web for research, and performing complex tasks like coding and integrating with external services.
Previously, OpenClaw was briefly named Moltbot and Clawdbot before gaining widespread attention, particularly after Anthropic took notice and expressed concerns about potential confusion with their chatbot Claude. The project was then renamed OpenClaw.
Since its initial release in November, OpenClaw has rapidly grown online, earning over 100,000 stars on the code hosting platform GitHub and attracting more than 2 million visitors within a week. This was followed by the launch of Moltbook, a social network similar to Reddit but designed for AI bots to interact autonomously without human involvement, which quickly became a widely discussed topic.
OpenClaw has earned recognition from AI experts and developers, especially for its capability to autonomously perform tasks on behalf of humans. It has been nicknamed an agent more akin to Jarvis, Iron Man’s AI assistant, than current AI helpers like Siri or Alexa, because it is not just a question-answering assistant but a local system that accesses files, runs scripts, connects to external APIs, and can extend its functionality independently.
However, concerns about OpenClaw and Moltbook have also increased, particularly regarding security and privacy issues surrounding this viral bot, as well as the uncontrolled nature of an AI-driven social network.
Altmanrevealed on the platform X that Steinberger will play a key role in developing the company’s “next-generation AI Agent,” emphasizing that the future will be a full-scale Multi-Agent system. Supporting open-source initiatives is crucial, aligning with Steinberger’s vision that the future of AI will not be a single, all-encompassing intelligent model but rather a system of specialized Multi-Agents collaborating like a human society.
Altman praised Steinberger as a genius with numerous ideas about the future of intelligent agents that can work together to deliver truly useful outcomes for people, predicting that this technology will soon become central to OpenAI’s products.
Previously, Steinberger was known for founding PSPDFKit, a company developing PDF processing technology, and he decided to come out of retirement to launch OpenClaw in late 2025. His joining OpenAI may bring a fresh perspective to the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) race, as Steinberger has expressed the stance that AGI should be specialized intelligence rather than universal intelligence.
OpenClaw will continue as an open-source project with OpenAI’s support. Recruiting Steinberger is not just about adding another engineer but about bringing his vision and open-source agent concepts into the organization.
As technology companies worldwide compete to develop AI Agents as full-fledged personal assistants, OpenAI’s acquisition of OpenClaw’s creator represents a key move in the AI talent war.
How quickly OpenAI can integrate its large models with OpenClaw’s open-source Multi-Agent concept into a flagship product remains to be seen. If successful, the resulting “personal AI assistant” could become a new industry standard in global technology.
