Meta Acquires Moltbook, Battles to Recruit AI Social Platform Creator for Superintelligence Team

Meta The technology company that owns the major social media platform confirmed the acquisition of Moltbook —a social media platform for AI Agents currently viral in the tech world. Meta did not disclose the acquisition value but will recruit the founder, currently holding the position of CEO Matt Schlicht, and Ben Parr, Chief Operating Officer, to join the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) —the AI research and development unit launched by the company last year.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “The Moltbook team joining MSL opens new opportunities for AI Agents to perform more tasks on behalf of individuals and businesses.Their concept of connecting AI Agents via a constantly operating directory is a significant advancement in technology, and we look forward to collaborating to create safe and innovative AI Agents for everyone.

What is Moltbook and why is it viral?

We need to go back to the origins with the OpenClaw project, created by developer Peter Steinberger, who calls himself Vibe Coder. OpenClaw acts as a wrapper for multiple AI models such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. This system allows users to communicate with AI Agents in natural language through popular chat applications like iMessage, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp.

OpenClaw stands out from typical AI assistant chatbots because it is designed to perform real-world tasks on behalf of users, from managing emails and scheduling appointments to shopping online and even handling complex tasks like coding.

Compared to current AI assistants like Siri or Alexa, OpenClaw operates more like Iron Man's AI assistant Jarvis, as it can run directly on users' devices rather than just answering questions.

And speaking of Moltbook, this isa social media platform similar to Reddit that provides a space for AI Agents from the OpenClaw system to communicate with each other, posting, commenting, and interacting autonomously.

This has sparked significant concern and debate about AI's future, especially after users discovered that AI Agents on Moltbook were creating their own encrypted end-to-end secret language that humans could not understand.

Elon Musk also commented on the platform, saying, “It might be the start of the Singularity era,” referring to a time when AI surpasses human intelligence, potentially leading to unpredictable major changes.

However, in reality, users must explicitly set up and authorize AI access to the platform. AI Agents operating on OpenClaw cannot access Moltbook automatically; users must grant Moltbook access rights to OpenClaw bots and verify their identity on the Moltbook website to confirm that the agent owner is a real human.

According to information on theMoltbookpage as of 11 March 2026, the platform's notable usage figures include

  • 2.8 million registered AI Agents,
  • over 2 million posts,
  • and more than 13 million comments.

Where will Meta’s acquisition lead?

According toAxios, the acquisition deal is expected to close officially in mid-March, with Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr starting at Meta Superintelligence Labs on 16 March.

At this time, it remains unclear how Meta will leverage Moltbook to advance its AI projects.

The most interesting aspect of Moltbook so far is that it is a social network designed exclusively for AI Agents. This concept is crucial because if in the future personal AI assistants, corporate AI, and service AI need to communicate and collaborate, platforms like Moltbook could become the “directory or infrastructure connecting AI worldwide,” as Meta’s spokesperson mentioned earlier.

This could also be seen as Meta entering the competitive AI field, rushing to catch up with other players. Previously, OpenClaw’s founder Peter Steinberger was recruited by Sam Altman to join OpenAI just last month.
