OpenAI announced the acquisition of"TBPN"an online technology talk show rapidly growing in Silicon Valley, stating that the core reason for integrating TBPN into the organization is to create a space for creative conversations about AI, supported by TBPN's strong content and community.
However, the deal’s value was not disclosed, drawing attention to the possibility that OpenAI is pursuing a "Narrative Control" strategy—an effort to frame or manage global AI discussions to communicate with users and investors on its terms.
TBPN or Technology Business Programming Network, is a daily news and podcast series founded in 2024 by John Coogan and Jordi Hays. Its hallmark is live minute-by-minute analysis of business and technology news, similar to Bloomberg and CNBC, but with a more accessible and tech-friendly presentation style.
Within just one year, TBPN distinguished itself as an industry insider media outlet, delivering fast, precise, and deeply insightful content not typically found in mainstream media, earning it the nickname "the Sports Center of the technology world" providing engaging conversations for followers of the industry.
TBPN has attracted interviews with global founders and CEOs such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman. Simultaneously, it quickly secured sponsorships from global brands including fintech companies, AI platforms, and financial market partners.
TBPN's success stems primarily from the driving force of its two founders who also serve as hosts, blending two worlds: "the media world" and "the technology world."
John Coogan is a Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur who co-founded the startup Soylent and previously built biotech and consumer tech companies. His founder mindset gives him deep insight into business models and revenue analysis, with a belief in technology and startup growth, resulting in a "Pro-Builder" and "Pro-Capitalism" perspective on the show.
Meanwhile, Jordi Hays founded a media and branding company, specializing in content, storytelling, and audience building. He understands audience needs well and knows how to create compelling narratives.
This combination enables TBPN to produce credible news analysis infused with engaging and viral elements, attracting viewers ranging from tech billionaires, executives, investors, and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley to general technology users.
Financially, despite being a lean media company with a team of just over ten, TBPN generated $5 million in revenue in its first year from advertising and sponsorship models, with projections to exceed $30 million by 2026.
OpenAI has confirmed that TBPN will retain "editorial independence" despite the acquisition. However, amid scrutiny over OpenAI’s safety and monopoly concerns, owning its own media outlet may help shape communication frameworks and narratives as desired.
This aligns with Fidji Simo, OpenAI's Chief Application Officer, who previously stated that OpenAI needs a platform for creative AI conversations because traditional communication methods have not worked well for a company unlike typical firms. Furthermore, TBPN’s influence within the tech community, especially industry leaders, will provide OpenAI with a valuable channel to convey its vision for driving transformative technology change going forward.
