Launch of Claude for Legal Connects Law Firm Systems with AI to Automate Nearly the Entire Process

Back in February, the launch of Anthropic's small feature Claude for Legal already sent ripples through the legal industry. Recently, the company caused a stir again by unveiling a new legal toolset for Claude Cowork that allows law firms to directly connect their existing software with AI, enabling automation of many tasks.

Anthropic's new tool is designed to help law firms automate administrative and document-related work, ranging from searching and reviewing documents, accessing judgment databases, preparing testimonies, drafting legal documents, to other related tasks.

These legal plugins support work across multiple fields such as commercial law, privacy, corporate law, labor, product regulation, as well as AI Governance laws and policies.

Additionally, Anthropic has launched the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a system that enables AI to connect directly with external data sources or software, allowing Claude to seamlessly integrate with the systems law firms already use.

For example, document management systems like DocuSign, file search platforms like Box, and legal research platforms such as Thomson Reuters—which owns Westlaw—can all be connected to Claude.

This launch comes amid intense competition in the AI legal market, which is becoming a new battleground within the AI industry.

In March, the AI legal startup Harvey, which employs Agentic AI for automated legal work, raised $200 million in funding and was valued at $11 billion.

A month earlier, competitor startup Legora secured $600 million in a Series D funding round and launched a major advertising campaign featuring actor Jude Law promoting the brand.

Both Harvey and Legora offer AI systems that assist with law firms' back-office tasks, including document management, information retrieval, case analysis, and complex legal procedures that previously required large human teams.

An Anthropic spokesperson said, “The legal sector is under heavy pressure to adopt AI, and law firms or corporate legal teams that start early are rapidly gaining a competitive advantage.”

They added that Claude is increasingly expanding its role into deep Knowledge Work, and the legal industry has become one of the company’s fastest-growing and most important markets.

However, despite AI companies rushing into the legal market, AI errors are increasingly causing real-world problems. Previously, many lawyers and large law firms were found to have used AI to produce legal documents riddled with errors.

Moreover, last year California issued its first penalty against a lawyer who used ChatGPT to draft an appeal document containing numerous fabricated citations and statements. Reports also indicate that some federal judges have started using AI to draft rulings, drawing attention from U.S. Congress members last year.

On another front, AI-generated lawsuits are being seen as a new form of legal junk, as many AI-created complaints contain flawed or baseless arguments, burdening courts with a large volume of low-quality cases entering the justice system.
