Anthropic is advancing a drug research and development project, beginning with internal studies to contribute to the development of AI tools for the pharmaceutical industry. This marks another technology company attempting to penetrate the healthcare and medical sectors.
At an event in San Francisco last Tuesday, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Head of Life Sciences at Anthropic, revealed that the company established this project to focus on finding treatments for neglected diseases—those that most major pharmaceutical companies deem commercially unviable and thus rarely invest in developing.
Kauderer-Abrams stated that a key reason Anthropic decided to undertake this project independently is their belief that to create AI models, products, and tools that truly accelerate drug development for the industry, the company must engage directly with the research process.
“We initiated this program because we believe that to build models, products, and tools suited to accelerating the pharmaceutical industry, we need to actively participate and learn alongside everyone involved,” he said. Kauderer-Abrams added.
At the same time, Anthropic launched “Claude Science,” an AI tool specifically designed for pharmaceutical developers and manufacturers to support and enhance the efficiency of drug research and development processes.
He further explained that Anthropic believes strongly in the power of Tight Feedback Loops—rapid learning and improvement cycles—and that nothing substitutes for hands-on experience in the field.
However, Kauderer-Abrams did not disclose how Anthropic would proceed if the company discovers a drug candidate with real potential, since typically pharmaceutical developers advance such compounds through clinical trials to test safety and efficacy before actual use.
A spokesperson for Anthropic told CNBC that, as a Public Benefit Company—an organization that balances business operations with social good—the company can choose projects prioritizing patient benefit first, including developing treatments for diseases often overlooked by commercial markets.
Claude Science is a platform that integrates tools scientists already use, such as research databases, data analysis programs, and computing resources, allowing researchers to perform all steps—from information retrieval and data analysis to drafting manuscripts for publication—within a single environment.
Anthropic states that the system is designed to support real research work, with key capabilities including:
Moreover, Claude Science employs a Multi-Agent system, with a primary Agent coordinating all activities, specialized Agents handling domain-specific tasks, and a Reviewer Agent that verifies citations, calculations, and identifies errors before automatically making corrections.
Anthropic noted that organizations have already trialed Claude Science, such as researchers at the Allen Institute who used it to create an AI system that reads thousands of research papers and summarizes them into academic review articles—a process that originally took two years but is now significantly faster.
Similarly, researchers at the UCSF Brain Tumor Center used Claude Science to analyze genetic data related to brain tumors and reported that it reduced analysis time to about one-tenth of previous methods, with results validated again by the research team.
Currently, Claude Science is available in Beta for users of Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise.
In recent years, major technology companies have continuously sought to enter the healthcare and medical markets, experiencing both successes and challenges.
For example, Alphabet and Apple have pursued this market through various projects and are now focusing on wearable technology, while Amazon has built its health business through acquisitions like One Medical and PillPack, now part of Amazon Health Services.
Kauderer-Abrams and Anthropic executives explained that their in-house drug research project is not aimed at directly competing with pharmaceutical companies but rather to collaborate with the industry to understand client problems and needs better, enabling development of Claude Science to meet real-world applications more accurately.
Jonah Cool, Head of Life Sciences Partnerships at Anthropic, said the company's goal is to focus on developing treatments for neglected diseases while simultaneously creating and supplying AI tools to life sciences companies to accelerate future drug research and development processes.
