VOLVO NEW EX60 Large Battery, 800-Kilometer Range, Set to Launch Soon in Thailand

Volvo is preparing to launch an important new electric vehicle with an impressive driving range. The electric SUV EX60 will debut later this month. Last week, Volvo released a teaser video presenting an electric driving range figure that surpasses competitors like BMW, Mercedes, and Tesla. Volvo also hinted that the EX60 might come in a 7-seat version.

We have to wait until the launch on 21 Jan 2026 GMT+7 to see all the details of the New EX60. The 810-kilometer electric range under WLTP standards alone is enough to create buzz among new customers. In reality, removing internal combustion engines and planning to sell only electric cars long-term limits drivetrain diversity. It seems luxury electric vehicles reached saturation too soon. Volvo's EV sales have not been strong, causing the all-electric sales plan to be shelved. Volvo will continue offering PHEV models with combustion engines, but for now, they want to succeed with the all-electric New EX60 first.

The rear and side views of the EX60 shown in the teaser reveal the shape of the brand’s new electric SUV. At the front, the signature Thor’s hammer-shaped DRL lights remain—a key brand feature that has not been discontinued. It includes segmented LED lights and two ADAS sensors mounted below each side mirror. The interior images are partially obscured but show new technology details to be installed in this model. Most notably, the integration of Google's AI assistant Gemini is included.

It is well known that Volvo’s style under Chinese ownership emphasizes simplicity, especially in their electric vehicles, which usually have clean interiors free of the control buttons once considered useful. The EX60 features a minimalist, clean-toned control panel, with a large vertically mounted infotainment display and touch-sensitive rotary buttons on the lower side console.

The latest interface will not rely solely on touch commands like tapping or swiping. The EX60 is the first Viking vehicle to launch with Gemini, enabling drivers to converse naturally without memorizing preset phrases or diverting attention to the screen. Drivers can ask Gemini to find addresses, book hotels from emails, check if newly purchased items fit in the trunk, or share ideas for upcoming trips. Gemini integrates with Volvo’s newly named internal platform, HuginCore, which combines proprietary software with technology from Google, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. All of this runs on the latest hardware, including Qualcomm's Snapdragon Cockpit and Auto Connectivity platforms. NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Orin chip gives the EX60 the highest processing power ever in a Volvo vehicle.

Today, most new cars use over-the-air software updates. After owners drive their EX60 out of the showroom, wireless updates and ongoing Gemini development will continuously improve the vehicle's functions throughout its lifecycle.

For context, the latest BMW iX3 offers a maximum range of 805 km. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 with EQ technology, unveiled at the Munich Auto Show in September last year (2025), has a range of 713 km. For Elon Musk fans, the Tesla Model Y focuses on long-distance travel with a 644 km range. Users should subtract about 100 km from advertised ranges for practical reliability during use.

Volvo states that EX60 owners won’t have to wait long at charging stations. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical system, the EX60 can add 340 km of range in just 10 minutes. The battery also comes with a 10-year warranty.

The EX60 is Volvo’s first model to use the SPA3 platform, an upgrade from the SPA2 architecture used in the EX90. Additionally, it is the brand’s first model to feature Volvo’s new adjustable seatbelt system, which uses sensors to calculate the passenger's height, weight, and body shape before deciding the necessary belt tension in case of a collision.

Unlike competitors like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC, which only have two rows of seats, the EX60 may include a small third-row seat hidden under the cargo floor. Volvo has not provided details about the 7-seat EX60 version, but cargo area images suggest two foldable seats are stored there. The vehicle’s frame shows mounting points for a 50:50 split-folding third row. There is enough space for a few suitcases when the third row is unfolded. Volvo will provide full details of the 2026 EX60 to the media on 21 Jan 2026 GMT+7.
