Large, solid, and robust, built to handle tough jobs—this is the super-tough Ford Ranger SUPER DUTY, a four-door American-style pickup with a gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kilograms (4.5 tons). It boasts a formidable towing capacity of 6 tons for heavy trailers, a massive 130-liter fuel tank for long distances without frequent refueling, and eight-lug wheel bolts indicating extraordinary engineering borrowed from the Super Duty F250. Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine with four-wheel drive (4A-4WD) and made in Thailand at the AAT Rayong plant, its smooth-tuned engine delivers 600 Nm of torque. Carrying a one-ton load in the bed feels effortless. Anyone used to standard pickups would fall in love with this truck instantly.
The 2026 Ford Ranger Super Duty officially launched in Thailand with a price of 1,599,000 baht for the Double Cab 3.0L V6 Turbo 4WD 10-speed automatic model.
Ford Motor Thailand arranged a review and test drive of this new pickup that pioneers a new path for adventure. PR and executives emphasized the Ranger Super Duty's performance, branding it as tough and fierce. However, it’s primarily a work truck with the highest payload and towing capacity in Southeast Asia. Simply put, the Super Duty sets a new standard for Thai-produced pickups, with no previous model matching its load and towing capabilities. The two-day, one-night media test included paved roads, natural terrains where typical four-wheel pickups struggle, and an off-road course with eight challenging stations designed to test drivers' control, torque power, durability under heavy loads, and intelligent technology.
The Ranger Super Duty, a new entrant in the mid-size pickup market, was designed by Ford engineers to elevate the Ranger line. Manufactured at Auto Alliance Thailand (AAT), it focuses on heavy-duty use with superior towing and payload capabilities compared to current Thai market pickups. Unlike the Raptor, which targets high-performance off-road enthusiasts, the Super Duty suits adventurous travelers needing rugged off-road capability and businesses or organizations requiring a heavy-duty vehicle beyond the capacity of typical pickups. It offers safety and versatility, making it a reliable partner for demanding tasks both in urban and rural settings.
The Ford Ranger Super Duty is designed for customers needing a rugged pickup ready for heavy-duty tasks, off-road adventures, and family leisure. Its target audience ranges from agricultural business owners seeking powerful towing and four-wheel drive capability to outdoor enthusiasts requiring towing and off-road handling. With unprecedented strength in its class, it supports a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 kilograms, a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 4,500 kilograms, and a gross combined mass (GCM) of up to 8,000 kilograms (8 tons). That's an impressive towing capability.
A 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine powers the four-wheel-drive 4A-4WD system.
The 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine supports B20 diesel fuel or higher, with a displacement of 2,993 cc, bore of 84.0 mm, stroke of 90.0 mm, and firing order 1-4 2-5 3-6. It has a compression ratio of 16.0:1 and dual overhead camshafts. The engine produces a maximum of 250 horsepower at 3,250 rpm and 600 Newton-meters of torque between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. It features a 10-speed E-Shifter automatic transmission, electronic parking brake, and meets EURO-5 emission standards. The front suspension is a double wishbone with coil springs and anti-roll bar; the rear suspension uses leaf springs. Both front and rear brakes are ventilated disc brakes.
On the test route, carrying a 1-ton load in the pickup bed over nearly 90 kilometers, the ride felt smooth though the weight at the rear was noticeable. Despite the 1,000-kilogram load pressing down, the rear did not sag. Inside, the Ford Ranger Super Duty cabin features a 12-inch multi-touch display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth connectivity, and SYNC® 4A voice command system for entertainment throughout the journey. Advanced driver aids include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane keeping assist, automatic high beam control that improves visibility without blinding others, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, parking exit alert, and rear collision prevention for enhanced safety and maneuverability. The large 130-liter fuel tank enables long-distance travel, heavy work, and extended off-road use without frequent refueling concerns.
A 360-degree surround camera assists driving through narrow paths and steep inclines, providing clear views of terrain and obstacles around the vehicle. The Ranger Super Duty features a heavy-duty 3.6 mm thick steel skid plate integrated with the vehicle structure, covering from front to fuel tank, ensuring confidence when driving over obstacles or harsh terrain. Suspension travel, approach and departure angles allow smooth passage over alternating potholes and steep slopes. Its wide wheelbase combined with All-Terrain tires delivers excellent off-road grip. It easily handles slopes steeper than 30 degrees. The vehicle wades through water up to 850 millimeters deep—50 millimeters deeper than the standard Ranger. Ford has installed vital system air intakes, such as the transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, and AdBlue tank, safely above the 850 mm waterline.
The vehicle includes Trail Control, an automatic off-road cruise control system, and Trail Turn Assist, which reduces the turning radius in confined off-road areas. When activated, if the driver turns the steering wheel nearly full lock in either direction, the system brakes the inside rear wheel (on the side of the turn) while maintaining power to other wheels, enabling easier rotation around the vehicle’s axis and tighter turning.
In the afternoon, the test moved to the challenging terrain of Khao Raberd in Nong Yai District, Chonburi Province—a dirt and gravel road renowned for its extreme steepness. The ascent is difficult due to steep slopes, narrow passages, natural ruts, rocks, and sharp hairpin bends that sometimes require reversing to proceed. Khao Raberd is filled with obstacles such as steep inclines, natural ruts, sharp corners, and rocky paths. The ladder-frame chassis uses thicker reinforced steel, with lower control arms cast from thick aluminum rather than folded steel. The rear differential was upgraded from a Transit model along with drive shafts, delivering power to eight-lug hubs borrowed from the F-250 Super Duty. The rear leaf springs were lengthened and reinforced, brakes enlarged, and the engine cooling fan performance increased by 25 percent. The transmission and drivetrain were also modified. The large 130-liter fuel tank includes a 4 mm thick steel reinforcement plate—doubled in some areas—capable of supporting the vehicle’s weight when resting on large rocks.
Power is delivered to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission familiar to Ranger drivers. It uses a torque converter for starting from a stop in first and reverse gears like typical automatics. However, it incorporates four planetary gear sets to provide 10 gear ratios and six clutches for shifting. Unlike standard automatics, this torque converter reduces overheating risk when towing or under heavy load, and clutches are not engaged during initial movement, reducing wear common in dual-clutch automatics during takeoff.
Essentially, the 10-speed transmission combines various advantages to minimize common causes of overheating and wear. The gear ratios are matched to the V6 engine’s torque to optimize performance. The Ranger Super Duty offers low-range gearing for off-road driving with a 4A mode that drives mostly rear wheels on open roads but smoothly engages front wheels when slip is detected, such as in corners. Drivers can select high and low gears using console buttons and choose terrain modes via a rotary dial. It includes electronic front and rear differential locks, hill descent control, and off-road steering assist, which brakes the inside rear wheel to aid tight turns. All functions are displayed on the infotainment screen, while descent speed is controlled by steering wheel buttons.
Behind the familiar Ranger steering wheel on difficult terrain, the added weight and strength of the Ranger Super Duty are evident. Yet, when unloaded, the vehicle’s handling noticeably improves. It’s clear that the Ranger Super Duty is not a Raptor and isn’t intended for high-speed cornering or small jumps (not recommended). The 33-inch Bridgestone Dueler All-Terrain tires provide surprisingly good grip on all surfaces. They produce some noise when pushed to limits but maintain sufficient traction for off-road driving. The increased weight and suspension tuning result in better road grip. Ford’s team is proud of the vehicle’s drivability, and media agree that while the ride is firm, it remains comfortable. This flexible driving character makes the Super Duty more versatile than typical four-wheel-drive pickups.
At Khao Raberd, driving off-road in low gear at a pace comparable to hiking, manually selecting the correct gear via the side buttons on the shifter and choosing the appropriate terrain mode via the rotary dial, activating hill descent control on the correct screen, and setting speed via cruise control buttons are not simple tasks but work excellently. Descending steep, rocky slopes is much easier than with other four-wheel-drive pickups on the market. The large display and front camera provide full visibility ahead. Sharp hairpin turns activate Trail Turn Assist. The rear suspension offers strong flexibility and movement under extreme conditions. The Super Duty performs impressively, combining size with agility beyond initial expectations.
