A new era of performance begins! Audi, the four-ring brand, once again showcases automotive advancement with its RS line by introducing the powerful all-wheel-drive Audi RS 5 sport sedan to the Hot Laps program. It demonstrated lap speeds at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, blending electric power and motorsport excitement once again with F1, despite new rules that have made the races less thrilling.
This appearance is more than a simple showcase; it is a demonstration of the power of new-generation drivetrains. The Audi RS 5 represents the first high-performance "hyper plug-in hybrid" (PHEV) from Audi Sport, incorporating the same electric drive technology used in current F1 race cars into a production vehicle, purely and directly.
At its core is a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor delivering nearly 640 horsepower. Dispel any notion that hybrids are sluggish, because under the hood of the new RS 5 lies a robust 2.9-liter V6 twin-turbo engine producing 510 hp, combined with a 130 kW electric motor. When both systems work together, the RS 5 unleashes a massive total output of 470 kW or 639 horsepower. Press the accelerator hard, and the car rockets back in the seat. The top speed is electronically limited to 285 km/h for safety, but enthusiasts can unlock it via a tuning box. This impressive spec sets a new benchmark for hybrid coupe performance, balancing power, fuel efficiency, and superior handling.
The RS 5’s intelligent torque control system excels not only in straight-line power but also in cornering grip, thanks to its quattro all-wheel-drive system enhanced by Dynamic Torque Control—an electronic torque distribution system. Its key function is to detect and instantly send torque to the wheels with the highest traction, especially during aggressive cornering, enabling the RS 5 to steer sharply, remain agile, and be easy to control in all situations.
Bleeding the DNA of racing, the car used for the VIP Hot Laps at the F1 circuit is a factory-spec vehicle with no engine or suspension modifications. Its body features a special Titanium gray shade accented by Lava Red four-ring badges on front and rear, and black alloy wheels inspired by the color scheme of the pure racing Audi R26.
Audi Sport engineers closely oversaw the car, and two legendary drivers with deep ties to the four rings were brought in to pilot VIP customers for thrilling rides on the track.
Dindo Capello, a veteran driver experienced in America, five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 12 Hours of Sebring.
Markus Winkelhock, three-time winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours, who made history by leading an F1 race in 2007.
Winkelhock expressed enthusiasm about the car, saying, “I can’t wait to take everyone for a spin on the F1 track, especially through the tight hairpin at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The quattro system and Dynamic Torque Control will clearly demonstrate their superiority. This is the true meaning of Vorsprung durch Technik (Advancement through Technology) from Audi, delivering both sportiness and everyday comfort seamlessly.”
Naturally, Audi Sport is using F1 as a front stage to launch powerful vehicles into the U.S. market, starting with SUVs that emphasize top safety standards, followed by the powerful RS 5 V6 PHEV.
This is not just a flashy showcase; Audi’s choice of the Miami Grand Prix as the platform to unveil the RS 5, which serves as the high-performance Hot Laps vehicle, is a strategic global play. The ultimate goal is to boost sales among wealthy American customers devoted to the four rings, marking a firm entry into the U.S. luxury car market with the latest products. The U.S. is the world’s second-largest automotive market.
Reports from international media indicate that this year Audi plans a major lineup refresh by launching luxury SUVs worldwide to outpace competitors. The highlight is the upcoming launch of the large Audi Q9 alongside the latest 2027 Audi Q7.
Additionally, the smaller, rugged Audi Q3 has already entered markets in Thailand and the U.S. since March. Audi is investing heavily, recruiting Hollywood stars like Morgan Freeman and rising actress Chase Infinity as presenters in a new advertising campaign to boost sales, aiming to have the freshest premium SUV lineup in the U.S. and global markets by year-end.
Marco Schubert, Audi AG’s Executive Board Member for Sales and Marketing, revealed the strategy: “Formula 1 is currently booming, with a massive global fanbase growth. We need to ride this wave to add excitement and strengthen Audi’s brand connection, while aiming for sustainable growth in the U.S. market. Audi has already begun this transformation on the road, especially with the Q9 developed specifically for Americans. I eagerly await its official launch later this year.”
Finally, customers can be fully confident because Audi Sport excels not only in performance and design but also leads luxury brands in safety. This is evidenced by the latest tests in April, when the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the highest safety rating to six Audi models.
Looking back, Audi has a proud and successful motorsport history in North America. This return, with the advanced hybrid-powered Audi R26 race car developed in Germany, marks its comeback as a factory team in America for the first time since the conclusion of Formula E in New York in 2021.
