GWM announced it has become the first automaker in Thailand to produce electric vehicles that fully offset imports according to EV 3.5 policy requirements before the program ends. After previously being the first to meet EV 3.0 requirements, GWM continues producing EVs mainly from its Rayong factory, increasing local parts content above 50% to support both domestic and export markets.
GWM (Thailand) announced a milestone in the Thai automotive industry by becoming the first manufacturer to produce electric vehicles domestically to fully offset imports under the government’s EV 3.5 support policy, achieving this before the program ended on 31 Jul 2026 GMT+7.
Recognizing Thailand's automotive potential and the growth of electric vehicles domestically, GWM signed agreements to participate in both phases of the EV support policies: EV 3.0 (2022–2025) and EV 3.5 (2024–2027). This aims to promote the expansion of the electric vehicle and key parts industry in Thailand and support the country's role as an EV manufacturing hub in line with the government's 30@30 policy.
GWM was the first company to begin EV production in Thailand at the GWM Smart Factory in Rayong. It was also the first to fully comply with EV 3.0 requirements in 2025. Most recently, in July 2026, GWM achieved full production targets to offset imports under EV 3.5, becoming the first automaker to fully meet the EV 3.5 policy requirements. The popular GWM ORA 5 EV smart electric vehicle played a key role in this success.
Producing enough EVs to fully offset imports under EV 3.5 confirms GWM’s effective planning, strict compliance, and sets a strong example among participants working with the government. This supports Thailand’s continued role as an EV manufacturing base, following past successes with pickup trucks and eco-cars.
GWM will continue full-scale EV production in Thailand to meet domestic demand and future exports. EVs sold in Thailand will mainly come from the GWM Smart Factory in Rayong, a comprehensive production base operating under the Smart Factory concept. It is a regional hub for right-hand-drive vehicles in Southeast Asia, capable of producing multiple drivetrain types—including battery electric (BEV), hybrid electric (HEV), and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles—with a maximum annual capacity of 80,000 units.
Additionally, GWM plans to increase the use of locally made parts to over 50%, expanding cooperation with local partners to strengthen domestic supply chains, boost economic value, support over 1,100 Thai employees, and enhance the long-term competitiveness of Thailand’s automotive industry.
GWM remains committed to delivering excellent products and services to Thai customers while fully supporting government policies. The company aims to contribute to sustainable growth in Thailand’s automotive sector, strengthen the electric vehicle ecosystem, and help position Thailand as ASEAN’s electric vehicle manufacturing hub in the future.
