Toyota entered the Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport in a real race for the first time at the Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport Challenge Cup, testing the hybrid system's power, durability, and control. Cokey P and Japan Carnest shared their experience after pushing the car through over 60 laps, noting it maintained consistent speed and revealed a new side of hybrid technology beyond just fuel efficiency.
When thinking of hybrid cars, many associate them with fuel efficiency, smooth driving, and daily usability. However, Toyota aims to prove that hybrid technology can go further by bringing the Toyota Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport to compete on an actual race track for the first time.
This model was featured in the special Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport Challenge Cup, a highlight of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Thailand 2026 second round at Saphan Hin Public Park, Phuket Province.
The Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport uses a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, code 2NR-VEX, delivering a maximum of 91 horsepower and 121 Newton-meters of torque, paired with an electric motor producing up to 80 horsepower and 141 Newton-meters of torque.
When combined, the engine and electric motor generate a total system output of 111 horsepower transmitted through an e-CVT gearbox. A key feature is the electric motor’s immediate torque assistance at low RPMs, enhancing acceleration and overtaking responsiveness while maintaining smooth and continuous power delivery.
This is why Toyota brought this model to the track—to demonstrate that a hybrid car does not have to sacrifice driving enjoyment for fuel efficiency.
The Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport stands out not only with its sporty exterior styling but also with suspension and handling tuning that deliver a tighter character. This enhances vehicle stability, confidence in cornering, and driver control responsiveness.

Thus, entering this car in competition is not only a marketing move but also a test of the hybrid vehicle’s capability built in Thailand under more intense conditions than typical.
After the event, automotive journalists Cokey P and Japan Carnest, who drove the Yaris ATIV HEV GR Sport on track, agreed the competition was less about winning and more about testing the hybrid’s performance and durability under strenuous usage.
Throughout the race, there were sudden brakes, collisions, and spins causing damage to the front and rear bumpers and doors, yet the car continued racing to the finish. This demonstrated the vehicle’s robustness and durability under conditions very different from regular roads.
Another impressive aspect was the car’s handling and balance. Even after losing control, the specially tuned suspension helped drivers correct and regain direction more easily.
Equally notable was the hybrid system’s performance. Before the race, there were doubts about whether continuous laps would drain electric power and reduce speed. However, over 60 laps, the car maintained consistent speed, with lap times improving from practice to qualifying, showing the hybrid system does not lose power quickly as some fear.
