BMW Confounds Expectations with 1,000-HP M3 EV Prototype While Keeping Combustion Heart

Just as the automotive internet community was calming down after Ferrari's electric debut, BMW reignited the fervor by unveiling a new shark-nosed EV prototype. This flare-up was already stoked by the Mercedes-AMG 4-door EV and Ferrari Luce models. This new entry is the upcoming BMW M3 electric version. On closer inspection, it aligns well with the AMG 4-door EV and is less quirky than the Luce, appearing as a more balanced sports sedan rather than the eccentric Luce.



To be clear, this model hasn't been officially launched yet; it has only surfaced to give a glimpse of what the first electric M might look like. This M EV is labeled simply as the "BMW M Concept Neue Klasse." BMW fans already understand the direction BMW M is heading. Imagine removing the aggressive aerodynamic parts designed to cut through obstacles, swapping out the sharp side mirrors that could endanger pedestrians, and taking off the rear strut brace that might compromise rear passenger comfort. What remains is the first EV from the M family, ready for market entry. In reality, those aggressive fender flares significantly enhance the car's appearance.


The car is built on the new BMW i3 platform, representing BMW's dual-strategy approach for high-performance vehicles. If most customers don't favor the four-motor electric version delivering 1,000 horsepower, there will still be a next-generation M3 with an internal combustion engine, likely a heavy 2.5-ton hybrid in some form. Essentially, BMW is preparing to launch two distinct M3 variants to compete in the market, letting consumer demand decide which sells better. This is a bold and courageous move, and naturally, the combustion-engine M is expected to be more popular than the four-motor electric version.


This design model was revealed to give enthusiasts a sense of what the actual EV version will look like. The exterior borrows details paying tribute to the legendary E30 M3, such as the four headlights, rugged angular wheel arches, and tightly detailed center-lock wheels. At the rear, there is a split ducktail spoiler reminiscent of the E46 CSL, while the four-light running lights front and rear honor BMW's endurance racing heritage.


The massive front splitter and diffuser channel air vents would never pass road-legal regulations, but the "Trimaran" design—three-part bumpers front and back—is expected to be production-ready. Additionally, the lightweight roof panel and side skirts are made from composite materials using flax fiber, a natural fiber that reduces CO2 emissions during production by up to 40% compared to traditional carbon fiber.

Inside, the seating position isn't as low or recessed as classic M3s or even current models, due to the battery pack located beneath the floor. The battery is reportedly a special 100 kWh unit with a unique chemistry not found in standard i3 models. It is engineered to support fast discharge and recharge rates without losing performance or slowing down under heavy use.


The compact steering wheel includes red shortcut buttons for selecting M1 and M2 driving modes, along with a button to disable the many annoying alert sounds (the 'bings and bongs') that often plague modern driving experiences. Red accents continue on the paddle shifters, which support an emulated shift system similar to Hyundai’s N series, simulating gear changes electronically.



BMW has gone all out by making the vehicle’s supercomputer—the 'Heart of Joy' system—a highlight feature. This system controls vehicle balance and response with multiple adjustable modes, including drift modes and torque vectoring, ready for instant activation. The robust module located in the center console is indeed the 'heart' referred to.





BMW is clearly experimenting boldly, throwing out the past and trying new ideas without looking back. For some diehard fans, creating an EV M3 is almost sacrilegious and could be seen as a hate crime against tradition. Yet, younger fans recognize that Tesla didn’t become the best-selling car brand by following or copying the old rules of German premium sedans.

Therefore, this prototype and the final production version, likely called the ‘Mi3,’ will undoubtedly become one of the most hotly debated and scrutinized cars over the next 12 months.

If, after all considerations, the look and essence of this car don't appeal to combustion-engine M fans, they can rest assured that BMW M continues to develop a traditional internal combustion M3 alongside the electric version. Although this dual strategy demands massive investment and time for research and development, it may be the only way to preserve the satisfaction of nearly all loyal customers.
