Breaking All Rules! Exploring AVATRs Futuristic Automotive Design from Munichs Design Center, Straight Out of Sci-Fi

Amid the automotive industry's transition to electric vehicles, many brands focus on advancements in performance and battery technology. In contrast, AVATR, a luxury electric vehicle brand, distinguishes itself through the "Emotive Luxury" design philosophy that values feeling and aesthetics as much as innovation. This concept is embodied in CMF (Color, Material & Finish), which elevates the selection of colors, materials, and textures into a simple yet striking design language felt in every touch. The Emotive Luxury DNA present in every AVATR model has earned international recognition with awards such as the iF Design Award 2025 and IDA Gold Prize 2024. The brand's vision seamlessly integrates design, art, technology, and lifestyle.

AVATR's design as a premium high-end electric vehicle brand results from a partnership among three Chinese giants—Changan, CATL, and Huawei. Its design concept has made a significant impact on the global automotive design scene. The core of AVATR's design revolves around its definition, concept, and identity.

Future Elegance—the luxury of the future. AVATR does not see itself merely as a vehicle but defines its cars as mobile sculptures of the future. The design eliminates all complexity, replacing it with sleek, modern luxury akin to concept cars, yet fully functional for daily road use.

The main design philosophy, Emotional Luxury, is driven by the AVATR Global Design Center in Munich, Germany, led by renowned designer Nader Faghihzadeh, formerly known for his masterworks on BMW's 7 and 6 Series. The design centers on three principles: Bold Authenticity—the true standout; Proportion—the car features a wide, low body with a long wheelbase and large wheels, forming a powerful sporty crossover coupe; Futuristic Lightness—integrating technology and design by seamlessly hiding LiDAR sensors, radar waves, and surround cameras to preserve the car's lines; and Gentle Tech—the interior is designed as a "Vortex," a center of feeling, with smooth curves enveloping passengers like a private luxury mansion rather than a typical car.

Distinctive design elements include the alien-like F-shaped LED headlights—thin twin front lights shaped as an F, instantly recognizable as AVATR from 100 meters away—and the spaceship-inspired rear window. Models such as AVATR 11 and 12 feature a sharply cut rear where the rear glass is minimized or absent (in model 12), replaced by a high-resolution digital rearview mirror system (Streaming Media Rearview Mirror). This creates a clean, solid, and sporty rear profile. AVATR DESIGN blends European vehicle proportioning techniques with cutting-edge Asian digital technology, resulting in electric vehicles that are not just ordinary but striking, futuristic, and emotionally engaging in every dimension.

Regarding investment structure, AVATR spends enormously, outspending typical Chinese brands by many times. The brand's design budget is embedded within its R&D expenditure. Since its founding through its latest Series C funding round, AVATR has spent nearly 2 billion U.S. dollars (approximately 65 to 70 billion Thai baht). The portion allocated to exterior and interior design is driven by three main costly factors.

The expense of establishing and operating the AVATR Global Design Center in Munich is significant. Instead of employing lower-cost Chinese designers, AVATR chose to base its design studio in Munich, Germany—a city with one of the highest living and automotive labor costs globally—to incorporate authentic European vehicle proportioning. The European studio operates with top-tier talent, including designer Nader Faghihzadeh, formerly of BMW. The annual design operations budget likely runs into tens of millions of U.S. dollars, covering designer salaries, advanced computer graphics systems, and full-scale clay modeling to refine aerodynamic principles.

Engineering and production tooling costs represent the highest expenses. The futuristic design contrasts with manufacturing simplicity. Management's approval to alter the rear glass on the AVATR 12 or create the unique curved rear on the 06T model requires entirely new production lines. Stamping steel or aluminum sheets into complex, seamless curves with sharply defined lines per Munich's design demands high-precision molds. The tooling cost for the exterior body of a single model reaches between 50 and 100 million U.S. dollars (about 1.7 to 3.5 billion Thai baht).

Costs for glass and headlights are also high. The slim F-shaped headlights and the expansive panoramic glass roof continue seamlessly from the windshield. Procuring these specialized components and testing their strength is significantly more expensive than standard automotive glass.

Material and architectural costs for the interior.

AVATR's interior design follows the Vortex concept (center of feeling). The dashboard curves smoothly to meet the doors all around. Stretching Nappa leather and soft materials over such complex curved surfaces leads to a higher scrap rate in production compared to conventional flat dashboards.

The 35.4-inch 4K panoramic display embedded beneath the windshield, along with a central touchscreen, requires a complete redesign of the dashboard's internal safety cross beam. This new structure must accommodate the display's angles while maintaining crash safety standards. The development budget for this concealed structural redesign is substantial.

Unlike typical Chinese brands that often buy ready-made designs or outsource European designers on a job basis to save money, AVATR maintains a permanent European design studio in Germany. It willingly pays high production line costs to ensure design fidelity. Consequently, hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars—or several billion baht—are invested in exterior and interior design and body engineering for each model.

In an era when performance is no longer the sole factor in choosing an electric vehicle, AVATR, a luxury electric car brand, offers a different value perspective. The belief is that vehicle differentiation arises not only from performance but from the first impression upon sight and touch. This belief is reflected in AVATR's Emotive Luxury design philosophy, which transforms the car into a companion and travel partner that resonates emotionally and meets every driver's needs through the CMF (Color, Material & Finish) approach—a global design language that conveys feelings and emotions perfectly through initial impressions.

Bozhena Lalova, Director of CMF Design at AVATR's Global Design Center in Munich, said, “In designing AVATR, we considered inspiration drawn from spatial dimensional clarity, harmonious design that respects human anatomy and fashion, and a blend of artistic cultural beauty. This led us to carefully select every material—not only for its beauty but also for the luxurious feeling it imparts to every touch. The smooth, soft surfaces convey warmth, safety, and communicate innovation filled with energy and creativity.” Of course, speed and range are essential to meet performance demands, but they cannot satisfy emotional and psychological values.

The experience of exterior design and tactile sensations (CMF) delivers direct value to the heart. It evokes an emotional aesthetic feeling of touch, which is where AVATR devotes its design efforts to create distinction and stand out from other brands. AVATR's design philosophy is confirmed by its achievements on the global stage, such as the AVATR VISION XPECTRA concept winning the iF Design Award 2026, AVATR 07 winning the iF Design Award 2025 and the IDA Gold Prize 2024—international accolades proving that Emotive Luxury is not just a concept but a tangible difference.

AVATR's international management team stated, “AVATR values engagement over rapid growth through unique design that creates experience and differentiation, meeting customers with product value. This is reflected in the successful sales of AVATR 07 in Thailand. We prioritize long-term brand trust for every customer choosing AVATR. Every decision you make encourages and motivates us to continue developing relentlessly.” In Thailand, AVATR has further boosted customer confidence with 12 flagship showrooms nationwide and enhanced sales and after-sales services to cover all areas, ensuring trust for every customer who chooses AVATR.
