
Fresh from England, the MG GO! Concept was unveiled to great excitement at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026 just days ago. This all-electric 100% hatchback in the B-segment is the first avatar paving the way toward the production version named MG2, expected around 2027.
This event saw the British-born brand under Chinese-owned SAIC announce its challenge to small competitors like the Renault 5 and Mini Cooper E, highlighting that affordable electric cars don’t have to be boring. Details released in international columns are very interesting: the design boldly reinterprets retro styling. The entire design was crafted by the MG Design Centre London team led by Carl Gotham, with the brief not to simply copy past retro cars but to reinterpret MG's classic identity in a Retro-Futuristic style inspired by legends.
At first glance, some complained it looked like a MINI, but the design team insists they drew purely on their own brand’s historic DNA, such as the clean proportions of the MGB GT, the muscular flared front and rear wheel arches reminiscent of the legendary MG 6R4 Group B rally car and Metro Turbo, and youthful 2000s MG ZR vibes. The body is a compact 5-door hatchback with a short, tight profile and wheelbase pulled close to the corners to evoke a Hot Hatch feel. The rear slopes stylishly, the roof appears floating, door handles are neatly hidden into the body, there are large alloy wheels, and the LED taillights reinterpret classic MG cars.
Marketing strategy positions this model below the MG3 and MG4. Upon production as the MG2, it will become MG's smallest and most affordable electric vehicle, targeting young urban drivers seeking driving enjoyment and a car with clear character—not just a plain metal box on wheels.
With Jozef Kabaň—a former top designer at Audi and Bugatti—now MG's global design vice president, the brand’s renewed identity is becoming clear. He notably said, “Innovation and technology can be shared, but brand character… cannot be copied or shared.” MG remains tight-lipped on motor and battery specs, typical of early concept launches, but technical details are expected to be released gradually between late this year and next.
