Honda to Launch Pickup Truck Based on Mitsubishi Triton, Targeting ASEAN Market in 2028

Honda signed an MOU with Mitsubishi Motors to develop a new pickup truck based on the Mitsubishi Triton platform, preparing to enter the ASEAN market in 2028. This will expand Honda's vehicle lineup and boost production volume and utilization rates at Mitsubishi's factory in Thailand.

On 22 Oct 2026 GMT+7, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a new pickup truck under the Honda brand, using the Mitsubishi Triton as the foundation, with planned sales in the ASEAN market beginning in 2028.

This agreement marks the first project between Honda and Mitsubishi Motors to supply vehicles that complement each other's product lines. Honda will add a pickup truck option for customers in ASEAN, a market where Honda currently does not offer pickups.

The new Honda pickup truck will be based on the Mitsubishi Triton.

The Mitsubishi Triton is a one-ton pickup truck featuring a ladder-frame chassis focused on strength. It is one of Mitsubishi Motors' strategic global models with high demand, especially in the ASEAN region. Using the Triton as the base to develop Honda's new pickup will allow Honda to rapidly and efficiently expand its product range, focusing mainly on the ASEAN market.

At the same time, this collaboration will help Mitsubishi Motors increase production volume and improve factory utilization rates in Thailand. Both companies reached the agreement after assessing that it would create mutual benefits.

Extending the Honda–Mitsubishi–Nissan Alliance.

This cooperation stems from Honda and Mitsubishi Motors exploring opportunities for collaboration under the strategic alliance framework established by an MOU signed on 1 Aug 2024 GMT+7 among Honda, Mitsubishi Motors, and Nissan Motor.

One approach studied extensively by the three companies for the short to long term is vehicle supply to complement each other's product lines by leveraging globally competitive models from each company to strengthen their respective brand lineups.

This approach allows each company to adjust their product offerings to fit the business environment and quickly and efficiently meet customer needs in each region.

All three companies will continue to strengthen strategic cooperation to enhance competitiveness and address diverse customer needs by fully utilizing each company's products and technological resources.
