The decision to end production of the Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe and E-Coupe primarily stems from the declining popularity of two-door sports cars, which SUVs have replaced for over 20 years. Utility vehicles with ample cargo space—at least more than coupes—have encroached on the sales that coupes once enjoyed, leaving them with little market presence. Mercedes-Benz's choice to retire the C-Class Coupe and E-Class Coupe and consolidate them into a single model, the Mercedes-Benz CLE, is part of a major business restructuring strategy, driven by several key reasons.
The product portfolio streamlining plan: Mercedes-Benz previously had many overlapping sub-models. Merging the C and E Coupe models into the single CLE reduces production complexity and simplifies choices for customers by limiting options. The CLE is positioned between the agile C-Class and the spacious luxury of the E-Class.
Cost reduction for the electric vehicle transition: Mercedes-Benz is reallocating substantial budgets from internal combustion engine (ICE) development to electric vehicle (EQ) technology. Discontinuing niche two-door models and replacing them with a single model saves enormous research, development, and marketing costs.
Changing consumer behavior: Unfortunately, many younger buyers prioritize space over driving emotion. The global market's rising interest in SUVs and crossovers has caused coupe and convertible sales to plummet worldwide. Models like the Audi TT, Lexus RC, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLC, and Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster have all faced unfortunate ends. Maintaining both coupe models is economically unsustainable due to economies of scale.
Strategic market repositioning: The CLE is designed to merge the best of both worlds using advanced engineering. Its body length is slightly longer than the previous E-Class Coupe, projecting a dignified image. The wheelbase is optimized for nimble handling like the C-Class, while interior space remains close to the E-Class. Mercedes-Benz equips the CLE with the latest interior and safety technologies from the new E-Class to attract high-end luxury customers, explaining the birth of the all-new CLE Coupe.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe, assembled in Thailand, is officially priced at 5,250,000 baht.
The exterior design of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ blends the luxury of the E-Class Coupe with the sporty agility of the C-Class Coupe, enhanced with AMG's muscular styling to make the rear body more aggressive than the old C-Coupe. The design concept, Athletic Elegance, emphasizes a wide-body structure that distinguishes the CLE 53 clearly from the standard CLE 300. Starting with the front Shark Nose, the front end protrudes slightly like a shark's nose for an aggressive, aerodynamic look. The A-Shape Design lines run from the grille to the lower air intakes, lowering the visual center of gravity. The AMG-specific Panamericana grille has 12 vertical slats with a large three-pointed star. The Digital Light headlights feature high-resolution adaptive high-beam assist plus projection of symbols onto the road.
A key change is the front wheel arches widened by 58 mm and rear wheel arches by 75 mm to support the wider track and better road grip. The hood carries twin power domes symbolizing the M256M engine's power inside. The rear balances asymmetry with two-stage LED tail lamps connected by a dark red strip, a small lip spoiler, and dual round quad exhaust tips on both sides. Dimensions: length 4,851 mm; width (excluding mirrors) 1,935 mm (+58 mm over standard model); height 1,428 mm; wheelbase 2,865 mm; front track 1,661 mm; rear track 1,657 mm; trunk space 420 liters.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ is relatively heavy due to its all-wheel-drive system, widened body, and added 48V Mild Hybrid technology. The curb weight (with fluids) is approximately 2,000–2,080 kilograms, with a maximum load around 2,500 kilograms. This weight rivals the larger CLS 53. The increased weight compared to the standard model comes mainly from three engineering factors: the drivetrain and engine weight— the M256M inline-six is larger than the standard four-cylinder; the turbo and electric compressor systems, 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive with complex mechanisms; and the 48V lithium-ion battery and Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) mild hybrid system, all adding mass to the powertrain and wide-body structure with steering assist.
The wider track front (+58 mm) and rear (+75 mm), reinforced chassis, and Active Rear-axle Steering system contribute to the overall weight. Despite the increased mass, AMG designed the weight distribution to remain balanced for agile handling. The low center of gravity concept positions the engine and drivetrain to keep the center of gravity low. The AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension is specifically tuned to manage the two-ton weight, ensuring stability in high-speed cornering with minimal body roll. The substantial mass also enhances high-speed stability on highways.
Aerodynamic highlights include Air Curtains and Air Outlets on the front bumper and behind the front wheel arches to reduce air pressure and cool the brakes. The optional AMG Night Package adds high-gloss black exterior trim on side mirrors, window surrounds, and exhaust tips for a more aggressive look. The significantly wider body gives the CLE 53 a fuller, more imposing stance compared to the standard model when parked side by side.
The M256M engine in the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ is an enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine combining twin forced induction and a 48V electric system. Unlike conventional single turbo engines, it uses a dual forced induction system: an exhaust gas turbocharger for mid to high RPM power, paired with a newly developed Electric Auxiliary Compressor (eCB) that provides nearly constant boost without waiting for exhaust flow. The eCB operates at low RPM to eliminate turbo lag, delivering throttle response like a large naturally aspirated engine.
The engine uses a second-generation 48V Mild Hybrid system with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) housed in the 9G Tronic transmission. The electric motor provides a temporary boost of about 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque. For efficiency, the ISG ensures ultra-smooth engine starts, enabling quick Auto Start-Stop and Sailing functions to save fuel. During deceleration or coasting, the system recovers energy to recharge the battery.
The combustion chamber features NANOSLIDE® technology, a special low-friction cylinder coating used in Formula 1 engines, enhancing durability and reducing friction. The CAMTRONIC variable valve timing adjusts intake valve lift for optimal load conditions, balancing fuel economy and performance modes.
The 3.0-liter inline-six engine has 24 valves, electric turbocharging, and a 48V mild hybrid system. It produces 449 horsepower (330 kW) and 560 Nm of torque, with overboost up to 600 Nm. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ drivetrain provides continuous linear power delivery from low to redline, with the inline-six's smoothness as a foundation. The exhaust note is tuned to mimic a V8 AMG engine. This engine is one of AMG's most advanced inline-six units, evolved from the M256 family to embody the AMG spirit and forced induction technology.Turbo lag is completely eliminated through coordinated operation of three components. The upgraded Electric Auxiliary Compressor (eCB) delivers higher and more sustained boost pressure for immediate low-RPM torque. The new larger Exhaust Gas Turbocharger maintains high-end power delivery without drop-off. Optimized intake and exhaust flow improves overall airflow efficiency.
Performance figures highlight the M256M's exceptional power for a 3.0-liter engine. The overboost function raises torque from 560 Nm to 600 Nm for up to 12 seconds during overtaking. The ISG motor adds 23 hp and 205 Nm briefly, enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.2 seconds. The engine offers dual character: in Comfort mode, the mild hybrid smooths throttle response for quiet, refined driving; in Sport/Sport+ modes, throttle response sharpens, the electric compressor works aggressively, and the AMG exhaust opens valves fully to deliver a thrilling six-cylinder roar akin to a V8. Despite its power, the engine meets strict emission standards thanks to friction reduction coatings, 48V architecture that powers auxiliaries without engine belts, and efficient combustion.
The Electric Auxiliary Compressor (eZV) in the M256M engine addresses the classic turbocharger drawback of turbo lag. Although not an exclusive one-man-one-engine AMG signed unit, the M256 is engineered to rival the performance of a V8 4.0-liter engine. So, if your car carries the AMG badge, even with a 2.0L V6 or inline-six without a signature, it still delivers authentic AMG performance.
The working principles of the M256M engine in the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ are particularly interesting.
Unlike conventional exhaust-driven turbochargers, the electric turbo uses a small motor powered by the 48V mild hybrid system to spin the turbine directly, reaching up to 70,000 rpm within just 0.3 seconds.
Sequential charging operation in the AMG CLE 53 coordinates the electric turbo with the large exhaust gas turbocharger in phases.
At low RPM, when accelerator input is detected but exhaust pressure is insufficient to spin the main turbo, the electric turbo activates instantly to pre-compress intake air, providing immediate power like a naturally aspirated engine without lag.
During transition, as engine speed and exhaust pressure rise, the main turbo takes over fully, and the electric turbo gradually disengages to save energy.
For sudden kickdown acceleration, the electric turbo re-engages to boost air pressure immediately, ensuring the engine responds fastest.
Benefits in the AMG CLE 53 include instant torque delivery from as low as 2,200 rpm, continuous linear power delivery resembling a V8's sharp response without noticeable turbo surges.
Efficiency gains allow engineers to fit a larger main turbocharger for maximum 449 horsepower without worrying about low-speed turbo lag.
The AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension in the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ was developed by Affalterbach engineers to provide dual character: comfortable luxury driving in the city and sharp handling on the track. Its adaptive adjustable damping uses electronically controlled shock absorbers that adjust real-time viscosity based on driving conditions. Each shock has separate valves for rebound and compression, enabling highly detailed impact absorption. Continuous monitoring sensors track speed, steering angle, and lateral forces to optimize damping within milliseconds. There are three driving modes selectable via AMG DYNAMIC SELECT or shortcut buttons on the AMG Performance Steering Wheel.
Comfort mode emphasizes softness and smoothness, effectively absorbing bumps—ideal for long-distance or everyday driving.
Sport mode firms up the suspension to reduce body roll, suitable for cornering or higher speeds.
Sport+ mode offers the stiffest setting for maximum agility and optimal tire contact during high-speed cornering.
The suspension works in harmony with standard Active Rear-Axle Steering: at low speeds (up to 100 km/h), the rear wheels steer opposite to the front (up to 2.5 degrees) for greater maneuverability akin to a short wheelbase car. At higher speeds (above 100 km/h), rear wheels steer in the same direction (up to 0.7 degrees) to enhance stability during cornering and lane changes. The optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package adds Active Engine Mounts that adjust stiffness per driving mode, reducing vibrations in Comfort and locking mounts tightly in Race mode for precise power delivery. The Race Drive Program tunes suspension and AWD systems for optimal lap times, including Drift Mode.
The front suspension uses a 4-link independent setup, and the rear employs a 5-arm multilink. A key feature is the widened track, with front arches expanded by 58 mm and rear by 75 mm over the standard model, accommodating the wider suspension and improving road grip.
The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system in the CLE 53 is a fully variable intelligent system, unlike standard 4MATIC in other cars. It uses an electromechanically controlled clutch to connect the front and rear drive shafts, allowing torque distribution from 0% to 100% to the front wheels. Under normal conditions, the system favors rear-wheel drive for sportiness but instantly shifts torque to the front wheels when slip is detected, maintaining vehicle stability. It integrates with AMG DYNAMICS, which processes wheel speed, steering angle, lateral acceleration, and throttle position to optimize torque balance.
At high-speed cornering, more torque is sent to the rear wheels to improve turn-in sharpness. On corner exit, torque shifts progressively to the front wheels to aid confident acceleration and prevent excessive oversteer. The Drift Mode, available with AMG DYNAMIC PLUS, fully decouples the front drive shaft, making the CLE 53 a 100% rear-wheel-drive car with reduced ESP intervention, allowing controlled drifting like a race car. The electromechanical clutch offers faster response than hydraulic systems, making torque transfer seamless and automatic to wheels with the best grip.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ comes standard with staggered wheels and tires—narrower front and wider rear—to handle the high torque and rear-biased AWD. It features 20-inch AMG light-alloy forged wheels front and rear: front wheels are 9.5J x 20 ET28 with 265/35 ZR20 tires; rear wheels are 10.5J x 21 ET53 with 295/30 ZR20 tires. The wide-body design allows these wide, low-profile tires to fit, providing excellent mechanical grip. Factory-installed tires are ultra-high-performance models like Michelin Pilot Sport 5S or Pirelli P Zero, rated for top speeds of 250–270 km/h. AMG wheels have aerodynamic rims to reduce drag and improve brake cooling. The 20-inch forged wheels are lightweight yet strong, reducing unsprung mass for sharper suspension response. However, the thin 30-series rear tires require careful driving on rough Bangkok roads or provincial routes during holidays to avoid damage.
The brake system and paint options are key visual elements enhancing the wide-body's muscular look. AMG's new signature paint finishes emphasize depth and sharply define body lines. Spectral Blue Magno (matte blue) is the AMG signature color, offering a stern, intense look that highlights the power dome on the hood. Patagonia Red Metallic is a vivid red with deep layers that shift shade in sunlight, perfect for those seeking sporty coupe flair. Graphite Grey Magno (matte dark grey) gives a race-ready appearance and is easier to maintain than glossy finishes. Opalite White Bright is a pearl white that contrasts elegantly with the black AMG Night Package trim.
The AMG Performance brake system is easily distinguished by its specifications. The front brakes have ventilated, perforated discs measuring 370 x 36 mm, while the rear discs are 360 x 26 mm, both featuring internal cooling fins. Caliper colors indicate the installed package.Silver calipers are standard with black 'AMG' lettering. In Thailand, the AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ comes with red calipers.Red calipers come with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package. These front calipers are 4-piston units with black 'AMG' lettering. The red color signals the car's high-performance capability and aggressive driving modes such as Race or Drift.
Beyond paint, wheels, and brake caliper color, AMG Night Package or Night Package II options add visual distinctions. Night Package I features high-gloss black side mirrors, window trim, and front lip. Night Package II adds black chrome vertical grille slats, the three-pointed star emblem at the rear, and black chrome model lettering for a cohesive dark theme.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ interior follows the Performance Luxury concept, blending the luxury design of the new C-Class and E-Class with AMG's aggressive styling. The front sports seats are upholstered in ARTICO/MICROCUT leather (Nappa leather optional), with red stitching and red seat belts. The seats have side bolsters designed to hold the driver firmly during spirited cornering. Rear seating is suitable for children or average-sized adults on short trips, with an EASY-ENTRY system that electrically slides the front seats forward for easier access. The latest MBUX Gen 3 infotainment system offers rapid processing and AMG-specific graphics. The 12.3-inch floating instrument cluster can display three styles (Classic, Sport, Supersport), with Supersport mode centering the tachometer and real-time driving data. The 11.9-inch vertical central touchscreen tilts 6 degrees toward the driver, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and includes AMG TRACK PACE for recording track data.
The command center features an AMG Performance flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in Nappa or Microcut leather, depending on the package. It has dual stalks and two circular AMG Drive Unit buttons below for changing drive modes and exhaust valve settings without removing hands from the wheel. The brake and accelerator pedals are polished stainless steel with rubber studs, offering a sporty, confident feel.
The console and door panels feature carbon fiber or metal weave trim contrasted with soft-touch materials and fine leather. Door panels have contouring that complements the console lines, with 64-color ambient lighting embedded around door edges and armrests. The Burmester® 3D Surround Sound system includes speakers integrated into the front seat headrests, providing immersive sound.
Climate control uses the THERMOTRONIC automatic multi-zone system with five jet-engine-inspired round air vents (three front, two rear) featuring LED color changes indicating temperature (red for warm, blue for cool). The Air Quality Package includes air purification and odor removal inside the cabin.
The Burmester® 3D Surround Sound system in the CLE 53 offers not only clarity but an engineered sound experience tailored to the coupe’s interior to create a mobile theater. Seventeen speakers surround the cabin, with FrontBass® woofers mounted in the front footwell frame to use the car’s structure as a natural sound box, delivering deep, rich bass with minimal panel vibration. Height speakers in the roof and upper areas create vertical sound dimensions, hence 3D audio. Headrest speakers embedded in the front seats (optional) provide personalized soundscapes enveloping the driver and front passenger.
Amplification and DSP use a 710-watt digital amplifier with multi-channel architecture that drives each speaker independently for clarity across frequencies. Vocal Optimization algorithms enhance vocal presence, making the singer appear to stand on the console. The system supports Dolby Atmos®, a revolutionary object-based audio format that allows sound to move freely around the cabin, offering detailed separation even with high-quality streaming files from services like Apple Music or Tidal.
Sound personalization allows detailed tuning via the MBUX central screen. Sound profiles include Pure (natural clarity) and 3D Surround (immersive). VIP settings focus sound to driver, front passenger, or spread evenly. Noise Compensation (VNC) automatically adjusts volume and equalization based on vehicle speed and ambient noise to maintain consistent listening quality. Notably, the system simulates engine sound inside the cabin in Sport+ mode, working with the Burmester® system and AMG Real Performance Sound to produce a natural six-cylinder roar without disturbing the outside environment.
The AMG badge signifies power. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 theoretically sits between the 63 and 43 models, offering sportiness without the extreme aggression of the C 63. It is a luxury car focused on style and speed but is heavier than the CLE 300. The four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine in the CLE 300 feels more nimble in city driving than the 3.0-liter six-cylinder in the AMG CLE 53, which carries additional weight from the 48V Mild Hybrid system. The exterior alone signals to the eye and mind that this is the new CLE 53, replacing the E53 and CLS53. It builds on the CLE Coupe platform with a widened track (front +58 mm, rear +75 mm) and rear 295 mm tires on 21-inch wheels, giving it a racing-car-like stance almost indistinguishable from the older C63 AMG Coupe. The car is especially striking in black.
My brief experience driving the old C63 Coupe for just two laps at Chang International Circuit showed a powerful V8, but the outgoing CLE 53 maintains the tradition of the 53 badge with an inline-six engine. It's encouraging that the new C63 uses a remarkable 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid. Under the sturdy AMG hood of the CLE 53 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine with reinforced components and updated software, producing 443 horsepower and 560–600 Nm torque with overboost—immense torque for a small sports car weighing as much as a four-wheel-drive pickup truck. This contradiction is quite striking.
The 48V Mild Hybrid system includes a 22 hp/204 Nm electric motor that enables ultra-smooth start-stop operation, making engine restarts virtually unnoticeable unless accelerating. The ISG system reduces turbo lag by allowing the large turbocharger to focus on high-RPM efficiency. All four wheels are driven through a 9-speed automatic transmission. Unlike previous 53 models, the CLE 53 4MATIC+ offers a rear-wheel-drive Drift mode as an expensive option that most enthusiasts appreciate.
Mercedes-AMG states the 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 4.2 seconds, reduced to 4.0 seconds using the Race Start launch control from the Pro Performance Package (an extra cost). This package also raises the electronically limited top speed from 250 km/h to 285 km/h. The Race mode dial includes the Drift mode, praised by racers but often viewed as unnecessary by their spouses. Controlling momentum is challenging due to the car's 2,000 kg weight, necessitating ventilated disc brakes (front 370 mm, rear 360 mm), special Michelin tires, adaptive AMG Ride Control suspension, AMG Dynamics, four-wheel steering (a CLE 53 innovation), and stability control with multiple difficulty levels. Since the test car had only 104 km, I decided to continue driving.
Driving to Pranburi District near Pak Nam Pran and north of Sam Roi Yot National Park, covering 285 km in the still-run-in AMG, the CLE 53 proved versatile—combining the comfort of a mature sports car with the agility of the M256M engine. It is calm and quiet in Comfort mode, with a silent engine and luxurious features controlled precisely. This makes it an ideal vehicle for older enthusiasts who still appreciate a stylish coupe. The CLE 53 is a fairly large coupe, with the main downside being its steep price of 5.25 million baht, making it out of reach for most.
Sport and Sport+ modes offer sharper, more stable responses but consume fuel at about 6–7 km/liter. The adaptive suspension works well, though road irregularities on rear 30-series tires require caution. The 20-inch wheels visually enhance the wide arches. The variable 4MATIC+ AWD system sends a noticeable rear bias, often making Drift mode unnecessary since it requires disabling all stability controls to activate. A question arises: why not make the CLE 53 purely rear-wheel drive with reasonable safety systems? Because it competes with the BMW M440i xDrive. AWD makes the car easier to control and more comfortable at speed on twisty roads. The CLE 53 is more distinctive than the previous AMG E53 Coupe, with better grip, responsive acceleration, and more race-like character.
The AMG inline-six engine has unique charm. The M256M in the AMG CLE 53 roars like a V8 when revved, although peak power ends at 6,100 rpm, reached quickly. It pulls hard with the brief 600 Nm torque spike. Paired with a well-tuned 9G Tronic transmission, manual mode can tempt aggressive revving until the upshift warning engages. At times, the 53’s ultimate intensity is clear, but no road is open enough to unleash its full power. The CLE 53 is less aggressive than the BMW M440i but powerful enough to keep pace with M Performance Coupes. It offers versatile capability and similar styling; choosing between them is a matter of preference. Also, the pricier Audi RS5 Coupe drives excellently.
After a full day’s drive, satisfaction with the latest 53 runs deeper than with typical sports cars. The light, user-friendly steering contrasts with the large sporty wheel. The four-wheel steering integrates seamlessly, slightly reducing the car's weight during cornering without compromising stability at the apex. The mode selector dial is an AMG hallmark, playing a vital role in easily choosing among many drive modes without distracting from the 11.9-inch touchscreen. Core functions are intuitive, including quick safety system deactivation. Overall, the interior ambiance matches the 5.3 million baht price, exuding luxury and refinement.
This price includes 20-inch wheels, adaptive Digital Light headlights, panoramic roof, 360-degree surround cameras, and Augmented Reality satellite navigation—though this feature works only with the vehicle's navigation system, not via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, which offer smarter apps. The Premium Plus option adds black exterior trim, carbon fiber and Alcantara interior accents, fragranced climate control, massage seats with intelligent dual systems, a high-quality Burmester sound system, and a Head-up Display. The sporty PPP package is optional, raising the price to around 6 million baht with Nappa leather and Magno (matte) paint. The 5,250,000 baht price is significantly less than the C63 hybrid, offering a less frustrating drive due to lighter weight and simpler drivetrain. Considering CLE 53’s leap in development and AMG’s dedication to drivetrain and chassis, product engineers say the CLE fully replaces the departed E-Class and C-Class Coupes. This CLE 53 expresses AMG’s mechanical essence but is smoother and more practical.
