Pros and Cons of the 2026 Ford Ranger XL+ Budget Model: 10-Speed Automatic, Lowered Price to Challenge Finance Market

Although pickup truck sales in Thailand have plummeted for nearly 2-3 years, Ford continues to compete with the budget Ranger model priced at 770,000 baht. As an affordable pickup, the 2026 Ranger XL+ has reduced equipment to fit customers with budgets under 800,000 baht. Designed for versatile use, including work and long trips, Ford Thailand launched the Ranger XLS in 2024, which gained enough popularity to continue. Offering an affordable pickup is a remaining market strategy amid heavy competition from Chinese brands encroaching on four-door pickups.

Once ranked third in Thailand's pickup market, Ford’s sales have diminished. Despite this, Ford has updated the vehicle to appeal to customers, with improvements in the powertrain and pricing. The 2026 XL+ rear-wheel-drive model now features a 10-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous 6-speed. The price remains competitive in a tough economic era. The 2026 Ranger XLS Double Cab with an Extra Pack accessory set costs under 800,000 baht. The new model shows slight design tweaks inside and out. After test drives on and off city roads, the XL+ remains a versatile Ford pickup at an accessible price—if financing allows.

The Ford Ranger XL+ starts at 779,000 baht after a maximum discount of 110,000 baht off the regular price of 889,000 baht.

It features a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine supporting biodiesel fuel up to 20% blend (B20), delivering a maximum power of 170 hp (125 kW) at 3,500 rpm and peak torque of 405 Nm between 1,750-2,500 rpm. It has rear-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The front suspension is an independent double-wishbone with coil springs and anti-roll bar, while the rear suspension uses leaf springs. The braking system includes ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.

Exterior dimensions and cargo bed size: length 5,370 mm, width 1,918 mm (excluding side mirrors), height 1,884 mm, wheelbase 3,270 mm, ground clearance 235 mm. The cargo bed measures 1,420 mm wide, 1,584 mm long, and 540 mm high. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone Dueler H/T 685 tires sized 255/70 R17. The curb weight averages around 2,038-2,046 kg, reaching the 2-ton mark due to added door and cabin structures. Maximum payload capacity is about 1,000 kg (1 ton), with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 3,190 kg including load.

The exterior of the 4-door, rear-wheel-drive Ford Ranger XL+ 2026 features cost-saving elements such as multi-reflector headlights with automatic on/off function, daytime running lights, high beams, and halogen low beams with a warm yellow tint, rare in modern vehicles. It includes intermittent windshield wipers, electrically adjustable side mirrors with turn signals, a front tow hook, black grille, third brake light, black side steps, and a side step on the pickup bed.

Inside, Ford understands changing lifestyles. The vinyl-wrapped steering wheel adjusts in and out. USB charging ports include both Type A and C. Storage compartments are plentiful. The door handle was moved from the top to the armrest area. When asked why not keep the traditional pull handle, an engineer explained that placing it there allows users to squeeze the lever and push the door open with their palm easily, requiring less movement. Seats changed from synthetic leather in XLS to fabric in the XL+.

The driver and front passenger seats are manually adjustable. The instrument cluster features a color 8-inch display. The car has a remote key, two 12V power outlets, power windows with one-touch up/down on the front doors, and a urethane steering wheel with audio controls. The touchscreen increased from 10.1 inches to 12 inches, with Ford Pass app integration, multi-touch color display, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth connectivity, and SYNC® 4A voice command system. There are two USB ports and six speakers. Notably, upon connecting a phone, the system automatically switches to the phone screen without interruption.

The 12-inch central screen supports diverse entertainment functions and enhances safety by displaying the rearview camera image, easing parking and maneuvering in tight spaces. The instrument cluster uses a larger 8-inch MID screen with customizable displays, though it cannot switch to a traditional needle-style gauge. The tachometer appears as a bar chart with fade effects, mainly for show rather than precise redline monitoring.

Regarding the manual mode transmission, Ford keeps the same approach: no paddle shifters except on the Ranger Raptor. For XL+, the 10-speed gearbox has +/- buttons on the gear knob. Pressing +/- in Drive mode limits the highest gear used; in Manual mode, it shifts up or down gears. Testing showed using the gear limit function on hilly roads is easier than manual shifting, which requires removing a hand from the steering wheel to press the knob buttons, a less convenient method. Ford says research indicates non-Raptor customers mostly keep the gear in Drive and rarely shift manually. This rationale makes sense but reflects cost-cutting to avoid competing with the Raptor, which offers more features but costs nearly 1 million baht more.

Interior features include power windows with anti-pinch on driver and front passenger sides and one-touch operation, dual-zone automatic climate control, manually adjustable front seats with four directions, premium fabric upholstery, an electric power steering wheel adjustable in four directions and designed to collapse in accidents, audio control switches on the steering wheel, and a remote key.

The infotainment system features a 12-inch multi-touch color display, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth connectivity, SYNC® 4A voice commands, a modem supporting the Ford app, two USB ports, and four speakers.

Safety equipment includes six airbags (front, side, and curtain), emergency call system, rearview camera for parking, immobilizer anti-theft system, ABS with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), automatic emergency brake light, electronic stability control (ESP), and traction control system.

Advanced driver assistance includes cruise control for speed regulation.

A practical feature is the side step on the pickup bed, designed to ease entry and cargo handling. Ford introduced this after noticing customers climbing on tires or struggling with the bed edge. The side step effectively reduces hassle and improves convenience. The cargo bed floor is designed to allow users to partition the space with plywood panels, enabling organized storage and reducing the risk of cargo shifting and damage.

The Ranger tailgate doubles as a mobile work desk with two tool clamp points and a built-in ruler (in models without the bed floor liner). The ruler marks every 10 millimeters, aiding measurement tasks. Accessory mounting points are thoughtfully placed to support daily use equipment like bed covers or foldable tents, catering to work, leisure, and family travel needs.

The upright front design with C-shaped headlights evokes memories of large Ford pickups from the 1970s-80s. It’s the kind of face that makes you hear a rough voice in your rearview mirror saying, “Hey, coming through, move aside.” The sizeable body dominates the road. The rear features new taillight styling but retains a sturdy, modern look. If only Ford altered the front and rear door shapes, few would recognize the chassis as the familiar T6 platform.

The Ford Ranger XL+ 4-door with rear-wheel drive and 10-speed automatic is a Thai-assembled pickup boasting a smooth, comfortable ride. The rear leaf spring suspension has been softened to feel like coil springs. Ford uses shocks specially tuned for the Ranger, designed for responsive compression and rebound to absorb road impacts smoothly. The vehicle handles turns better than previous models, with a firmer suspension. This new XL+ caters to drivers who prefer a comfortable, fast ride on long trips, outperforming all competitors in the 700,000-800,000 baht price range.

If pitted against market leaders like the Travo using their strengths, the Ranger XL+ would not win. However, its focus on engine and wind noise reduction creates a quiet cabin, appealing even to those who previously disliked pickups for noise and harshness. Sales figures support this, with XL+ outselling other Ranger variants. Its price, performance, value, and driving feel combine to offer a complete package accessible during Thailand’s economic challenges over the past 2-3 years.

Pickup buyers in Thailand, whether choosing Travo, D-MAX, Ranger, Navara, Triton, or the unfortunate BT-50 (which lost its feel after partnering with Isuzu), prioritize durability and service centers. Ford is not among the top in those areas yet. However, for those seeking a distinctive pickup, Ford leads in acceleration, torque for tough situations, smoothness, quietness, standard safety features, and electronics that reduce accident risks. Engineers and researchers have pushed through some features despite budget constraints to enhance daily usability. If you appreciate this completeness and accept unproven durability (not a curse, but because vehicles haven't yet reached customers), the Ford Ranger suits you. If the seatbelt fits comfortably over your shoulder, it’s a good fit. Getting spousal approval or bringing your partner for a ride might even lead to them wanting to drive.

In summary, the dynamics of this 770,000-baht pickup excel in performance, steering, suspension, and powertrain. Lacking four-wheel drive avoids complications with front and rear axles, but rear-axle-only drive might face challenges off-road. The lighter weight compared to 4WD models yields fuel economy of 10.5 km per liter during typical driving with overtaking at speeds averaging 90-110 km/h, occasionally reaching 150 km/h on hilly routes. This efficiency surpasses typical pickups consuming 7-8 km per liter, which is notable given high fuel prices.
The interior is acceptable for a 770,000-baht price, though premium features from higher trims are mostly removed. Regrettably, no reverse warning beep is included despite the large vehicle size, which would improve safety. The improved 10-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and is expected to be durable. The 2.0-liter engine accelerates without sluggishness. The 0-100 km/h time is 10.7 seconds—not fast but not sluggish like older models taking over 13 seconds, which required extra effort during overtaking.

In the context of Chinese vehicle price wars, stricter financing regulations, and economic difficulties, an affordable pickup offering nearly complete features can help people manage daily livelihoods more successfully, at least to some extent.

Summary of pros and cons of the 2026 Ford Ranger XL+ 10-speed automatic priced at 779,000 baht.

Pros
1. Value and affordability: At under 800,000 baht (7.7 hundred thousand after maximum discount), it is a four-door lifted pickup priced accessibly, suitable for tough economic times.

2. Well-matched powertrain and engine: The upgraded 10-speed automatic works smoothly paired with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel generating 170 hp. The 0-100 km/h acceleration of 10.7 seconds responds promptly without the lag typical of older models.

3. Suspension and dynamics are outstanding: Custom-tuned shocks absorb impacts smoothly, reducing rear leaf spring harshness to mimic coil springs. The cabin is quiet from wind and engine noise. It drives and corners better than competitors in the 700,000-800,000 baht segment.

4. Better-than-expected fuel economy: Being rear-wheel drive (without front axle and 4WD system weight) allows decent fuel efficiency of 10.5 km per liter on hilly routes with high-speed overtaking.

5. Fully equipped electronics and displays: A large 12-inch touchscreen (up from 10.1 inches) supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-inch color MID display, and cruise control.

6. Versatile features around the vehicle: A side step on the pickup bed facilitates entry and loading, the bed floor is designed for partitioning with wood panels, the tailgate converts into a mobile work desk with tool clamps and a built-in ruler, and the internal door handle position allows easier opening with a palm squeeze.

Cons / Limitations

1. Cost-cutting for pricing led to removal of many premium features. The seats downgrade from synthetic leather (in XLS) to fabric, and headlights remain halogen multi-reflector with a warm yellow tint.

2. No audible reverse warning beep despite a rearview camera displayed on the 12-inch screen. This omission is unfortunate given the vehicle's large size.

3. Transmission and shifting limitations: No paddle shifters (only on Raptor). The +/- buttons are on the gear knob, requiring the driver to remove a hand from the steering wheel on hilly terrain, which is inconvenient.

4. Instrument cluster graphics cannot switch to classic needle style. The MID screen's tachometer uses bar charts with fade effects, more decorative than functional for redline monitoring.

Long-term durability remains unproven for this indie brand. Ford is not a top choice among ordinary customers regarding reliability and service centers compared to market leaders. The 2026 XL+ awaits real user feedback after deliveries.
