Fierce from the Factory! Testing the Thai-Assembled GWM TANK 500 DIESEL 3.0T V6 9AT 4x4 with a Diesel Heart

In recent years, the popularity of Chinese vehicles has soared continuously. As Chinese brands establish themselves firmly, their vehicle lineups have expanded in various countries. Most recently, GWM introduced the large SUV TANK 500 with a 3.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbo diesel engine developed by GWM. This diesel powertrain elevates the TANK 500 to a premium PPV SUV grade, surpassing the luxury level of the familiar GWM TANK 300 model.

Starting with the TANK 500 Diesel, a new member of the PPV SUV family, it features a bold American-style aggressive design with a large chrome front grille and bumper. For those who dislike chrome, there is also an all-black grille option. Viewing the TANK 500's front from the rearview mirror gives an imposing feeling. Its large, sturdy body dimensions rival the Land Cruiser 300, giving the vehicle a powerful presence. A highlight is the electric side steps that automatically extend and retract, a panoramic glass roof, and very comfortable seats adjustable in many ways—unlike other electric seats that can be difficult to adjust.

During a test drive from Bangkok to Khao Kho, the 4WD TANK 500 Diesel impressed with comfort. The launch from a standstill was notably smooth. The turbocharged inline-four diesel engine combined with the 9-speed transmission propelled the vehicle swiftly despite its size. It achieves 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds. However, acceleration excitement slightly decreases at high speeds on highways. The vehicle's weight of approximately 2.6 tons is noticeable during hard braking or slalom cornering, but overall control remains good with minimal body roll, thanks to a fully retuned suspension.

Surprisingly, the diesel engine is noticeably fuel-efficient even on mountain roads at cruising speeds of 90-110 km/h, achieving a fuel consumption rate of 11.5 km/liter. The suspension reduces harshness and firmness typical of Chinese SUVs. Its strength lies in a comfortable cabin that helps make journeys relaxing.

The vehicle is fully equipped following Chinese style, featuring a massive 14.6-inch central touchscreen with sharp, realistic display supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It works with a digital instrument cluster and a heads-up display (HUD) providing clear information. The interior is adorned with wood accents and leather seats with 8-point electric massage—yes, this is a luxury PPV with massage seats for off-road adventures! Rear passengers also enjoy wireless charging pads and spacious legroom.

The flagship TANK 500 SUV embodies a premium rugged design similar to the Land Cruiser 300, enhanced with electric side steps styled like Maybach, alloy wheels, and chrome trim around the body. Its large body size exudes luxury. The driving performance is acceptable with no major flaws, except the large size may make parking in downtown malls a bit challenging. The suspension absorbs bumps smoothly on paved and gravel roads. Off-road driving modes genuinely improve rugged capability with 3-point differential locks, 221 mm ground clearance, 30-degree approach angle, 22.5-degree breakover angle, and 24-degree departure angle, ready to tackle all obstacles.

The interior is the standout feature, inspired by the grandeur of European luxury vehicles. It includes a 14.6-inch central screen, wood trim, and soft leather seats. Rear legroom is spacious. Build quality and materials have undergone durability and scratch resistance tests to ensure long-lasting use.

Considering its size, refined design, high-tech options, and well-set suspension, the TANK 500 is a desirable vehicle. Pricing is expected not to exceed 1.7 million baht. Both the 300 and 500 models demonstrate GWM's impressive progress, especially in the diesel-powered SUV segment. With 620 Nm torque, it can comfortably tow a 3.5-ton trailer or caravan.

In summary, the NEW TANK 500 3.0T DIESEL elevates the Premium PPV segment with a large diesel engine delivering increased power and torque, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The 9-speed automatic transmission (9AT) offers precise ratio control. While the chassis, wheels, tires, and brakes could be slightly improved, the vehicle's weight necessitates careful braking distance management. It performs well in city driving and long-distance trips with challenging winding mountainous roads like those in Khao Kho National Park. Luxury, comfort, and the new electric side steps enhance convenience. The electric power steering with adjustable response ensures stable control with well-positioned seating.

Initially, the HEV hybrid version of the TANK 500 did not strongly penetrate the market, but various improvements have enhanced driving quality, especially reducing body roll and noise. The engine runs smoothly without vibration or loud noise even under acceleration for overtaking. If priced between 1.6-1.7 million baht, it should sell well despite competition from established PPVs and strong contenders like the Ford Everest. The luxury and affordable price of the locally assembled TANK 500 Diesel should attract SUV buyers significantly. No need to speculate—those interested should test drive it. Compared with market-leading rivals, the GWM TANK 500 is competitive, aside from brand confidence and after-sales service, where Great Wall strives to maintain its position as the top Chinese brand.

The official launch price announcement for the GWM TANK 500 3.0T DIESEL will be on 21 August 2026 at 11:00 AM during the Big Motor Sales event at BITEC Bangna.

The NEW TANK 500 3.0T DIESEL with a 3.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbo diesel engine is available in two trim levels, offering features that comprehensively meet the needs of modern leaders.
